Just wondering what you guys do with the last 3"-4" of filler rod. I'm just starting out and already have a small pile of short filler. Are they just usually thrown out or is their a use for them?I've only used filler in 18" lengths and of course that meanstwice as many leftovers as I'd get using the filler whole but I can imagine my control issues magnified with three feet of filler flailing around behind me.How do you know the blacksmith's dog? When you hollar at him he makes a bolt for the door!
Reply:I used to just weld it together, I clip off the welded bit as you get real close, rather than try to put the (usually) big glob into the weld. Aluminum filler is a bunch tougher to join, just use needlenose pliers to get down to the last inch or so.Experience is something you get right after you need it

Reply:I keep all the 3-4 in stubs and use them in a modified pin vice like tool. Great for tacks.

Reply:a few weeks ago a client asked me why I throw the leftovers away, I just told him it costs a lot less to throw away then weld together at 80~$/hour anyway that's the economic part, the welding part is.. you will bring contaminants in the weld and stopping in the middle of a weld to get another wire is unproductive at least.sometimes I make this out of scrap filler Attached Images--------------------------------------------------------------www.becmotors.nlyup, I quit welding.. joined welder anonymous
