Hiim on a heavy wall (sch 160) stainless pipe job now that i can walk the cup and im learning how to do it.. i usually freehand dip everything because the pipes i was welding before was all Ut and xray,, UT would show lack of fusion if it wasnt dipped... anyway.. im learning to walk the cup for my caps, just to learn how as another technique to know...im curious what amps more experience welders with this technique would use for 3/32 filler rod on the cap pass... foot pedal yes.. but just curious.. 115? 125? 135?ty in advance for any information
Reply:To some extent, you could say "the colder, the golder"....but pace has a big impact on color also.If you are so cold you have to slow way down, you are too cold. You will know when you can barely feel the ripples with your finger, the weld ties in at all points, and the color is there.Last edited by geezerbill; 03-07-2014 at 07:22 PM.
Reply:Speed, how much filler you push into the puddle, electrode angle, arc length all change the amperage needed. I would start around 125 amps and work my way up until I can travel the speed I like while pushing as much filler as I like. Just got to try it to find what works.Airco Ac/Dc 300 HeliwelderMillerMatic 200 (stolen)Miller Maxstar 150STLMiller AEAD200LE (welding and generating power) Hobart MIG
Reply:I have been capping .500w 8" with5/32filler at about 190-210
Reply:why is OP capping heavy wall with 3/32? Get a big wire and turn the heat up.
