So we are keeping my daughters dog for a while, my wife found a broken wire in the cage and I said, hey I can fix that. Put a 20-40 amp stick in the HF 80 amp stick welder and bam! Fixed it. Maybe dumb luckThen I said I can't take it anymore and grabbed the Lincoln and tried it out on a 1/8 scrap. Clearly I need practice but it looks like it had plenty of juice with the .035 flux core wire. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Reply:Looks like you need to slow down and let the puddle form more and you might be a bit long on your stickout.Don't be fooled by the marks on the back. That just means the back got hot, not that you had plenty of power. Your front beads don't show me that. A lot of guys get fooled by the heat marks on the back into thinking that it means things it doesn't..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:So what's your point? My Lincoln 200 can do almost that good!  Attached ImagesDon’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:Yes sir, I will practice tomorrow. I just really like the wire welder as opposed to stick. That was the first thing I did, so yes I'll start practice tomorrow. I have had it for a week and just been too busy to even touch it. I also had the VHS that came with put on DVD so I'll watch it tonight. DSW what lens number should I use? I have an auto darkening mask but it's not adjustable. I think it's too dark for me. Maybe intended for 220 size unit.  Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Reply:Shade depends a lot on the user. 10 is a good average shade number. 110v vs 220 won't make a difference on light all that much. You still need a unit that is dark enough to block the light. My guess is that part of your issue might have come from out running the puddle.I typically run 9-10 for tig, 10-11 on mig, and 10-13 on stick. Mostly depending on amps used and lighting conditions in general. I go darker outside on average. 10 is about where I keep my hood most times, though my backup right now has a fixed shade 13 in it and I can do most stuff with that if I need to. I need to get my new gold shade 10 in my other backup hood I got this spring and see how well it works. You want the hood dark enough you don't see spots when done. Any of those shade will stop the UV light. One thing many guys don't understand is that when you can't see, you often need to go DARKER, not lighter. You can't see due to the glare of the arc. Going darker reduces that glare and makes the puddle easier to see. I see way too many guys who are overly concerned by not seeing the whole continent while welding. You only need to see enough to stay on course. Most times I couldn't tell you what's happening beyond 1" max in front of the weld. I just have no need to see that far ahead. Even with a shade 13 I can usually see at least 1/2" in front of the puddle, and that's plenty enough to follow a joint..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size.
