updated: Rusted strut repair

I seen that where the strut mounts up top, there were pinch welds so I figured that plate would come off.....So I started drilling with some good ole carbide bits after I removed the struts. My question now is, Should I make a patch (like the cardboard peice) to butt up to the existing metal, or should I cut out the old metal and patch the new in (like a butt joint)? If I just butt it up against whats already there, it may lower my mounting holes for my strut a little. Attached Images
