OK I admit it, I am Mr. Anal when it comes to being able to find stuff instantly, I'm also one for making sure I'm not running to blows or Home Despot for onesey twoseys of nuts bolts and stuff, way too much time wasted. Ok......So here's my solution, a 46 "bay" storage unit for these plastic organizers. The black and red come from amazon and are made by Stanley----ur.... I should say are sold by them. The clear ones are a couple of bucks at Wally World made by an 8-year old chinese girl working in a dirt floor factory. In the middle is a couple of slide outs that double as drawers with a lid so that I can rest a storage tray on it. With bolts full, you don't want to be hauling these across your shop, trip on the air hose, spill the contents, and set the shop on fire just to collect the insurance money so you don't have to sort through 5,000 of some tinny little pieces and parts. It's off to the powder coaters now to be done in red. It will also have 1200 lb casters in the event of the inevitable dropping that tiny circlip and it hitting you shoe and going beneath where all the black widows and scorpions are just waiting for you.
Reply:Nice solution. I use those sorts of boxes on the work truck and it's a royal PITA pulling all of them out to get at the bottom one usually. I may build a smaller version to put on the truck. May work better than the slide out tray system I used to use. The roller glides for the drawers were to easy to open, and if parked on a hill either all the drawers slid out at once at you, or the slid out and leaned against the door sometimes jamming the latch system.Book marking this for future reference.Have any close ups of how you did the sides? I'm guessing it's simply angle iron attached to the uprights, but can't tell if you worked out some neat tricks or not. Looks like 1x2 angle.Last edited by DSW; 08-18-2012 at 10:02 PM..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:Looks nice and you even have a cool gaurd dog Where did you get the slides?Do they work well with a weighted container on them?
Reply:Power--the slides are rated top 100 lbs. and I get them at Woodworkers Warehouse they can be found here:http://www.wwhardware.com/kv-8405-fu...-slide-kv8405/They roll smooth as silk, I have used them for all sorts of applications and loads. In this application only two pairs on slides are used for these trays to sit the containers on.DSW--here is a close up, I only welded the bottom of each 1 x 1 x 1/8 angle at that there were 200 welds. I dont think you could ever put enough weight on them to have them pull away from the upright. Here's a closeup.
Reply:Very nice...it pays to be organised.Years ago I used coffee jars screwed by the lids to the bottom of a shelf to store all my screws etc.Ian.
Reply:It would have been better to flip the angle over and only weld the top. As is, they may work fine, but once they start to bend the welds will snap off. I'd bet you could snap one of them off with one hand and a pair of pliers. My name's not Jim....

Reply:Nce work. What size material did you use for your verticals? Did you use the same for your base? What are you base dimensions?I built a similar setup out of wood serveral years ago. However, it has since has the small plastic bins added to the side and is now leaning somewhat so a much more substantial frame is in order. How much do you think it will cost to powder coat yours?Keep the pix coming.Cheers.Sign on East Texas payphone: Calls to God 40 cents......it's a local call...

Reply:I've been using those boxes for a longtime now and then around 10yrs ago I found a boxes that are about twice the size of the ones you are using, the beauty of the ones I use is the dividers are movable. Not as posh as your setup though. Attached Images
Reply:Ok. I get now your point of how O.C. you are. This is very good. Saves a lot of time... and money, too.
Reply:I've been amazing a collection of small fishing tackle / craft thread boxes over the years. The ones that are about half the size of the boxes you guys have pictured. I'm collecting too much stuff to put in them now, so I'm upgrading my collection to these bigger boxes.I only have 4 of them so far though. Nowhere near what is pictured.
Reply:Unfortunately i 2nd what not jim mentioned in message #6... if not welded from behind or top, it is an accident waiting to happen! Nice project i want one (with double welds)...:-)
