Since the beginning of summer I have had the "Kid" do 90% of the welding at the shop..But he is back at school and it's been awhile since I have done any "Heavy" welding and now it's all up to me.It's just like riding a bike.4140 Shafts..C.R.S. heads..(1020)First pass..Second pass..Only the welds facing out are "Stitched".."Walking The Cup..Whatever you call it...Heads..Rollers..70" Face..3/4" wall thickness..Finish @ 5.500+.000 -.001Long journals have 3 steps..Short side has 2..I guess I havn't lost my touch!Tomorrow it's just sit and watch go round and round!!...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:Zapster... you suck! While many here really struggle to make a decent weld or two, along you come (la-de-da) and turn out factory robotic-looking perfection - time after time, post-after-post.  Frankly, I find it rather depressing!  Attached ImagesRick V 1 Airco Heliwelder 3A/DDR3 CTC 70/90 amp Stick/Tig Inverters in Parallel1 Lincoln MIG PAK 151 Oxy-Acet
Reply:I tried 1/2 wave setting on my 330 this am.  Took a minute of exploding and evaporating tungsten on some dirty aluminum to switch it back to full wave.   I love how u prove with every weld that all these fancy advanced inverter features are not needed to produce Awesome welds.   BTW do you have any inverter machines in the shop there ?Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250

Reply:Originally Posted by soutthpawWrite it up and explain why your answers should be in decimal..  explain how you spent time with Zap learning a real world skill and how to run a lathe, mill. fit up components etc.  based on decimal measurements. then ask the instructor to give you a better reason to provide answers in another format and show you how it would better apply to the career path you are pursuing...  Demonstrate some critical thinking and reasoning skills instead of just being another Lemming in a math class..

Reply:Awesome Zap! You need to start doing some Tig video lessons. I'll buy one of each."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:Mr. Stukas you've proven to yourself and to zap that you can pass his final exam.  You did all that TIGing with only 4 tungstens and the pressure of a time limit!  I envy your opportunity but you did all the work. Now, slow the F^@K down and convert your decimals to fractions and provide both answers.  There is a lot of math in the shop too.  Technically, some fractions like 1/3 are more accurate than 0.3333 repeating.BTW zap you rock.  Thanks for all your posts.Miller Syncrowave 180SDLincoln WeldPak 100 with gasHandheld Milwaukee BandsawO/A Cutting Torch

Reply:Good to see your back in the saddle. Great work as usual.
Reply:Now......Let's get to the machining part! After letting them cool overnight..First thing to do is set up the steady rest on the end of the lathe and leave the compound near the chuck..Most guys just use the steady rest spots that were used during the tube boring part but myself?Nope.Reason being is that after heating the tube for the .010 shrink fit then all the welding the old spots are not perfectly round anymore..Therefore if you try to center drill the end of the shaft and the tube is out say .003?Then your centerhole is out .003 and if you attempt to turn the journal then you end up with a .003 eggshape condition..Not very good.So what I do is just let the far end do what it's doing and then I turn new steady rest spots on the journal near the chuck after indicating the old spot near the chuck to as close to zero as you can..Do all 4 journals and turn the spots exactly the same size...It HAS to be round now and using the journal rather than the tube when facing off the journal it keeps the unwanted vibrations at bay..Once that is done centerdrill the end and face the journals to length then just "Kiss" the centerhole one last time with the centerdrill and we are ready to go..After that we lose the steady rest and start turning!I will finish these up Monday and until then.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
