Hi! I'm starting an IUOE apprenticeship soon in a NYC local and was told that they're looking for some new guys to get into welding for some upcoming big jobs. Everyone I know (family and a few friends) that are operating engineers are heavy equipment operators, and so I'm just wondering if there's any IUOE guys here that can answer some general questions...I have zero experience. Did you have welding experience or certifications before getting into the union? What's the work you do daily like? What sets what you do as an operating engineer apart from what other welders in other trade unions do? Do you make a comparable wage to equipment operators? Do you ever climb in the seat of a machine anymore, even though welding is your primary gig? And, any advice is kindly welcomed! Thanks.
Reply:#32 yrs in IUOE and did it all, running eqpt including hyd RT cranes, running and maintaining portable crushers, which requires lots of difficult welding, and turning wrenches. My 3 yr apprenticeship included a welding course in stick w/ 7018. If an old hand offers to teach you how to run anything and boss gives his blessing, go for it!! The more you know how to do, the sooner you get called out of the hall. Reply:I've never belonged to the operator's union, but worked side by side with them all my life. They have mechanics that all they do is repair equipment, very little operating other than moving equipment around. You have crane oilers, and deck engineers who maintain the cranes. A lot of it will depend on the company you go to work for.Dont pay any attention to meIm just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:IUOE #12 Los Angeles (San Diego)Mechanics could weld as part of maintaining / repairing equipment. During bad times, welder BA's were a bit touchy about non welders welding on other than equipment. (Very touchy, I learned the hard way)

Reply:My brother was HDR and did welding when needed either for repair or setting up plants I was an operator and I only did welding when helping the mechanics when my machine was broke or like on one desert job when the steel line got a hole in it in the tank of the water pull and nobody wanted to go into that oven and fix it ... Going in to a tin can in 125 degree heat and firing up a torch then welding up the offending leak is not a great ideaBut did earn me respect from the boss and kept me employed for over a year when most of the other operators had been laid off after the heavy dirt was moved but I also run several types of machines and check grade....diversity is a great advantage ...besides running just one of something is boring Backed my CATMA over your CARMA oops clusmy me What would SATAN do ??
