Got a couple of issues with my 220V... The good:      Wiring can handle 60 amps. The bad:      It's on a 40A breaker that pops after about a 1/2 second as soon as I turn the machine on. Not surprising from what I've heard here...     This breaker has been used daily in the past to keep a compressor off at night, so it could be pretty weak at this point.  It looks like a bunch of people here are using 50amp circuits with some success. Also, the electrician set up a switch box with 30amp fuses. I think I have a beefier box floating around I can replace it with.I can't seem to find a 2 pole breaker online that allows for the giant initial inrush current for the transformer. At least not one at a big-box store. Apparently these are available with 100ms+ allowance for the current surge. I'd like to at least try to replace the breaker first and give it a shot.I really just want to play around a bit and lay some beads with stick for now, hence wanting to try and get it working on the supply I have. Even if I'm just laying beads on 1/8" plate with 1/16 or 3/32 rods for the time being. The answer is obviously buy an inverter machine.. but I can't right now. Plus ESAB's been sitting in the corner for a while ... it's screaming "for god's sake ... use me "ESAB Heliarc 252
Reply:At rated output which is 250 amps the Heliard 252 needs 100amps of input power without PFC and 88amps with PFC.If you're breaker is poping while the machine is idle then i would assume the breaker is the problem, while the machine could in fact be the issue, a new breaker is cheap and easy to install. I run a miller syncrowave 250 on a 60amp breaker and i can weld up to 230ish amps before popping the breaker. The esab is very similar to the sync 250. They both basically require the exact same input voltages and amperage requirements.ESAB MigMaster 275Miller Econotwin HFMiller Syncrowave 250
Reply:All circuit breakers have some form of delay built into them.  Search google for "circuit breaker trip curve" and you can read some on this. You can buy an HCAR rated circuit breaker. They have a trip curve that handles inrush better. If you look carefully on the side of most two pole QO circuit breakers, they well have HCAR embossed on them. If it is an older breaker, it might not be HCAR rated. Try replacing it with a modern breaker.Note - just commenting on breaker trip curves ... not on the practicality of the rest of it.-Jim
Reply:I got a new 40amp GE 2 pole breaker for $12 with a time-current curve that allowed around a 9x current inrush for 0.1 seconds... worked like a charm.  I had a 40amp HCAR rated breaker in there, but i think it just had weakened over time. Was able to get the stick welder going, not sure what volts/amps i was at, as the damn knob is broken on the adjustment.ESAB Heliarc 252
