Hello all, total greenhorn here, what kind of respirator(s) do u recommend, if any? Learning fcaw and i realize that i get real close to the weld so i can better see and understand "reading" the weld. I'm outside with a slight breeze swirling around when i notice that i'm in the fumes. any recommendations on a respirator? I can't imagine that breathing this in can be any good  for my health. I've read alot here on this forum and will continue to do so. I appreciate all the learned info. up til now and throughout the future.                         -Ken

Reply:you dont need a respirator use a fan or find a new position for your body to see the pool better
Reply:The 3M 1/2 face respirators with the P100 filters are decent. You can also go with one of the top end air hoods if you want/need that kind of protection.Keep in mind it needs to fit well or it's not very good. Many guys don't understand this. Also if you have heavy facial hair, most respirators will not seal well. You'll need to shave to get proper protection from most units..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:Holy crap u guys respond fast! Just placed order w/ cyberweld for 3m resp. Appreciate it lots. I'm clean shaven so it should seal up well, and i'll prolly end up changing my position as well. While i'm laying down some wire, do i "have" to have the nozzle on or can i run it w/o? After all it's flux, LE .030

Reply:Had a few pre-lunch drinks , so may not be so clear on my answers but I would gowith a mix of what was suggested about respirators and fan/air. Just think about it,what the equipment puts out is not that healthy. If you want to stay healthy, you willneed to exhaust the gases and protect yourself. Play it smart - let the exhaust doit's work and stay out of it's way so that you need minimum "respirator coverage".All this may seem obvious and basic but I had the same problem doing stickwelding. I had a bad a poor mask, didn't consider airflow etc. Now I do it outsideand make sure I orient myself so that the breeze is doing it's work and respirator need is at a minimum. If you're inside then look out for yourself properly.
Reply:I welded for years with nothing, the air in some shops was so bad I felt like crap at the days end. I started to wear a mask with particulate filters. It helped. Then I switched to carbon filters and it was much better. Now I use the Adflo air pack, I really like it, my face is kept cool and it's much easier than breathing through a mask, especially when the filters plug off.Leo
