I needed a small box of 3/32" 7018 rod today.  I couldn't get by my LWS before they closed, so I stopped by Airgas.  All they had in this size was the Radnor Brand.  The guy behind the counter said that it was made by Lincoln.  Is this true?  Is this rod any good?  I normally get either Hobart or Esab rods, but he let me have this box real cheap.
Reply:Radnor rod varies. How did it run for you?
Reply:I don't think it's been discussed here recently but, I seem to remember everyone agreeing, Radnor SMAW electrodes are bad. Let us know how they run."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"
Reply:I have not had a chance to run it yet.  I will let you know.  I did notice that it is made in Mexico and I know that Lincoln has a lot of stuff coming from Mexico.
Reply:Sent a guy to the welding supply once to get some 5/32 7018.  He took it upon himself to save us some money, and bought like a 5 pound package of the Radnor, instead of the 50 pounds of Lincoln I told him to get...I will say it makes some nice 5/32" pins for hinges if you happen to tap it too hard on something.  Because that's when all the flux would fall off of it.  I absolutely hated it.  I've had similar results with Atom Arc, but that was over 20 years ago, so it may be different now.

Reply:If you have a choice there isn't much reason not to buy KNOWN good electrodes, but if a box is cheap and there's nothing else available might as well fire a couple up to see how they run.Stick rod is like toilet paper. You will need it, so stock up well in advance at the best deal you can get.We had a free sample of their 6010 which ran well, for example, but didn't buy bulk since there's not much point in training students on what's not used in the field. I'd stick with Lincoln or Atom Arc 7018, and BRING IT BACK if you get a bad batch which is subject to happening with ANY brand.
