How do you balance exercise with welding?I recently stopped working out, because I fear that if I work out then my body will be tired on welding day. Should I just do a 1 full body three hour workout a week or continue with what I used to do which was workout different muscles every other day? Also, what exercises are best for welding?
Reply:Stop???Why?Vary your training, welding/work is all types of positions and time stationary.Military Presses. Squats & the Farmer's Walk.and if you climb columns, chin ups........lotsa chin ups
Reply:If you're so tired you can't function the next day you're overtraining. Do varied workouts, multiple times a week. If I have a particularly physical work week (working on scaffold overhead for instance) I work out less, or adjust what I do work out. Don't forget the cardio too.
Reply:Just pull start a generator 500 times a day, go up and down an 8' ladder 59 times, and curl your leads 70 times in each hand. Haha! Working out on the job!
Reply:Suck it up buttercup!!! Hit the weights and the work!
Reply:About 7 years ago I ran 7k a day, found it cleared my lungs along with the other benefits.
Reply:You just need better motivation. See what happens when you can't flog the employees any more? .No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:12 ounce curls are the best exercise for welding.
Reply:You handle enough iron or drywall, or lumber or move cement, carry feed sacks, pick coffee, lay block every day the only workout you'll need involves cold mixed drinks, a good looking guapa and a jaccuzi..... or aguas thermales---if yer lucky   lotsa fun in a cold rain.Just keep the lil guy in the warm water .Speaking of which. Time to head down to Da River. Heard a bit of rumbling last night. It may be too hot to get in.Generally it's 105 or so.Bubble gumTooth pixDuct tapeBlack glueGBMF hammerScrew gun --bad battery (see above)
Reply:Dang Burpee.  It is a rare post where you don't incite jealous ire.  Sigh!
Reply:I probably should have mentioned that I didn't mean permanently . I just meant until I found a better workout schedule. As for over training, I think I might be. I often tend to workout to long. One time I overworked my biceps and couldn't bend my arms for about 1-2 weeks cause I injured my tendons. Thanks for all the responses.
Reply:Swimming or cycling are great workouts that compliment metalwork.  The cardio is what we don't get at work, so if we can get our heart rate up and keep it up for 30-40 mins, that will be huge for your fitness.  You will live longer and you will be able to do metal work longer.  Doesn't that sound good?  I have seen many people in the trades who are strong, who look strong, but they have pencil legs.  This will not help them as they age.  Metal work is hard on one's body.  I've been working metal for 22 years and it is a struggle to keep my body in shape so it can do what I ask of it.  Short answer: back off on the weights, and jump on a bike.
