Reply:The slag inclusion with the 7018 (seen at start of the bead) is caused by the rod being cold. When you start the arc with that rod, you should long arc it for about 1 to 1.5 seconds to let the rod warm up.

Reply:Some people advise to just stick the rod to the workpiece (or any grounded piece of steel for that matter) for a couple seconds to let the rod warm up. Then use it to make your desired well. I don't know how well it works though. The safest way is to keep 7018 in an oven... but again... hobbie welders cannot justify such ovens.Mikel

Reply:Originally Posted by InsanerideSounds good, but first off all;;  do or did OP use an oven for AC 7018? And GT87, I would bet that the cold start was a discraxion and the end weld  was another distraction but the whole majority of the weld was  xcellant for a AC 7018 I n my opionion. Thinkingdistracts me.What I like about your reference to stalling "1 to 1.5 seconds"  is that for cold 7018 ;this would help or have a positive efect on evaporating the Hydrogen Rod. Or does it? Low Hydrogen rod means it sucks Hydrogen outa the Air so the initial stall/heat would preheat/evaporate allowing the 7018 reach optimum penetration. I know when my 7018 is ready when they burn my hands coming from the ovenIve been needing a LASER  thermometer from HF for some time now. Has anyone been using them and how/what for?
Reply:Your 7018 beads have porosity at the start. That is almost always caused by too long of an arc. You can not long arc 7018, ever. Porosity will quickly develop if you do. The start of the weld bead is the most important with 7018...keep your arc short.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
