So what do you think of this theory:People that play an instrument can learn tig welding faster. For the simple reason that playing an instrument like the piano requires hand, eye and foot coordination and keeping a steady beat.I even bet similar professions like using a sewing machine would help one learn tig faster. Any teachers out there notice it? I've noticed it in the very few people I have helped train to weld.
Reply:How about my theory ? People that can TIG with both hands can play the lead to Eruption or Slight Return within a year ?Yeah. All of the above Bubble gumTooth pixDuct tapeBlack glueGBMF hammerScrew gun --bad battery (see above)
Reply:BTW. Stevie could TIG. So do Jeff Beck and Billy Gibbons.Bubble gumTooth pixDuct tapeBlack glueGBMF hammerScrew gun --bad battery (see above)
Reply:unless they're stevie wonder ... ?
Reply:Doing anything with all three, or even four, limbs thats "mentally taxing" I feel helps. Riding manual bikes and other ATV equipment even could help. Just the practice of getting your brain to register 3-4 things at once and get them to function correctly in the correct sequence helps.
Reply:My theory is that if you can do cursive writing in English, you can learn TIG welding easier than if you only know how to type. And, if you can do cursive writing, in English, BACKWARD............you are already a Master TIG Weldor.
Reply:AluminumWelderI know a number of professional musicians that can barely walk through a door-way without incident because they possess no spacial facilities.Your analogy has to be taken on a person by person basis. Dexterous timing, and spacial timing are not the same thing.Opus
Reply:Jewelers make great welders. Surgeons too, I'm told by a buddy who taught one.

After all, we can work a clutch, brake, and throttle, while steering and shifting, all while seeing in 2 different directions and cussing a steady stream, you would think we were naturals. Hasn't worked out for me so much tho.
Reply:Knowing how to set up the machine and make adjustments is important to learning to tig.  Do you know how to tig if you cannot turn the machine on or hook up leads properly/polarity or adjust gas flow, ect.   The dexterity thing won't matter if polarity is wrong or tungsten is broken.   Kind of reminds me of a plumber who had a oxy- mapp setup.  He got so angry because somebody adjusted his regulator pressure settings.  He thought would never have to set them...but he could braze.Sent from my SPH-M830 using Tapatalk
Reply:I had a girl friend a long time ago who could play the flute.  She could not weld but I didn't mind at all.
Reply:I think it all depends on how much someone is willing to learn. I have taught a few guys how to tig. The first thing I told them is they are wanting to learn a trade as their hobby.
Reply:No relation whatsoever. There's a lot of other similar things a person could be good at... video games, driving a car fast, extreme sports, martial arts, etc... Why would playing an instrument have more of a relation that any other hand-eye coordination activity?Bottom line is people become good at what they really choose to. It took me a while to fully realize it, but I can become quite good at literally anything I want to. You don't have to have natural talent to become good at something, it just might take a bit more work. This is a really powerful realization.Last edited by MikeGyver; 03-21-2014 at 02:26 AM.Welding/Fab Pics: www.UtahWeld.com
