Hey guys-I'm a fairly novice welder but I am planning on welding up some 1" square tubing into a bookcase for my office.I'm wondering if the best way would be to:A.) Weld up each shelf as a rectangle and then add the vertical pieces..Or:B.) Weld up the top and bottom shelves, add the verticals and then weld in the horizontal shelves.Or:C.) It doesn't matter..I drew up a terrible picture trying to put what I'm saying into picture. LOL

Reply:I think amount of cutting will be 6 of 1 or 1/2 dozen of the other..I think though, it might be easier to do the verticals and weld in the horizontals, to get the best looking unit. But I'm the newb. LOLLast edited by BellyUpFish; 03-21-2014 at 11:45 PM.
Reply:Don't weld in the shelves, sometimes you need to move that shelf up a little to fit that thingI[d drill holes in the verticals for removable pins, then use them to make a basic frame like a door frame only deeperLook at some high dollar shelves, they do the same thing.
Reply:How are you going to fit them together? If you do shelves first, then the vertical will be outside the shelves or with some precise measuring the shelves be tacked in some way to receive the verticals at the corners. If the verts are to sit outside, then i would build shelves first. If verts and shelves are intersecting at the corners, then i would build two opposite sides first then connect to form shelves. I am constantly reminded how everything matters. Remember tack tack tack then weld after tacking tacking tacking. Tack first.Sent from my SPH-M830 using Tapatalk
Reply:Oh I see. I was thinking only 4 verts. Definitely do sides first. Only aligning 2 sided, Not 3.Sent from my SPH-M830 using Tapatalk

Reply:Plan B if you want it to look straight when you're done.My name's not Jim....
Reply:Plan B for sure. You said aquarium. Water is almost 8 lbs /gal. Just sayin.Bubble gumTooth pixDuct tapeBlack glueGBMF hammerScrew gun --bad battery (see above)
Reply:If you're going to put a fish tank on the shelf, you're going to have to have access for maintenance, leave lots and lots of space above it.I'm thinking something like the tank height or more
Reply:Been planning on making the tank shelf a little taller than the rest. Need to play with the idea some.It will only be a 30g breeder, which is only ~13" high, but nice and long for the fish I want in it.Last edited by BellyUpFish; 03-22-2014 at 05:29 PM. |
