So this morning I went into town to pick up a box of 6013s for a few jobs I had to do....literally every rod I used finger nailed really bad that it was just impossible to weld with them....maybe 5 out of the 20 rods I used didn't fingernail...I moved my earth around about a dozen times....so WTF???Was it the rods or sum thing else????Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:Sounds like the rods suck. Been there. 25% welded normal.Tap a couple and see if the flux flakes off too easyBubble gumTooth pixDuct tapeBlack glueGBMF hammerScrew gun --bad battery (see above)
Reply:I'm not familiar with the term but I think I know what you mean by "finger nailed".Welding into a corner?Can you switch to AC?Settings?MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:Yea I was welding into corners!Brand I'm not familiar with...I was literally cursing and screaming...every ****in rod burning arse ways ! Yea duaneb55...on fillet welds on dc-Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Reply:Yep ,finger nail = BAD FKN ROD !    Was there whiteness to their color ?
Reply:Not sure what u mean by splitting it? SorrySent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:Yea they were pretty white ,,,Any good 6013s I usually use are a darker grey...saying that the few that did weld ..welded real nice...but that ain't any good if 90% are a heap of ***Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkLast edited by Paddypower; 03-22-2014 at 01:11 PM.
Reply:wet a rag and wipe the rods with the wet rag, sounds like they're too dry
Reply:Welding into corners on DC can suck. I like AC better on 6013 anyway and they just weld where you point them that way.Good luck - arc blow is frustrating... Reply:.   Good old video about arc blow got to love disney
Reply:Question for the pro's (or at least those that weld for a living ).Although equally frustrating, isn't "finger nailing" a slightly different malady than that of arc blow?I know arc blow is a phenomenon resulting from magnetic fields caused by DC weld current and can be reduced by relocating the work clamp or eliminated by welding with AC.From what I've read since my previous post, finger nailing is similar to arc blow but differs in that the arc typically goes in one direction leaving the flux in a finger nail shape on the opposite side rather than the arc going all over out of control.  Again, I've read finger nailing is/can be addressed by dampening the rod flux, turning up the heat by 10 or so or both. How close am I?MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:I turned up the heat by 20 amps..didn't make any difference ...the rod just finger nailed and went nuts lolIl try rubbing the rods with a wet clothSent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:Put the rod straight in the stinger and steer that fcker where it needs to go. No one ever listens, now I know why Sundown left. Same question will pop up tomorrow.I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys

Reply:Is arc blow causing your finger nailing problem? You can get finger-nailing without arc blow. Using incorrect rod angle can cause a self induced finger nailing situation. Once a finger nailing situation develops, you have 2 options. If you wish to keep welding, you must shorten your arc as short as you possibly can to keep the rod as close to the puddle as possible. If you don't, that long finger nail of flux on one side of the rod will force the end of the rod to push away from the puddle and you will get a long arc (increased arc voltage) and a loss of shielding. The other thing you can do when your rod starts to finger nail is break the arc and start over with a fresh rod. The only time I get finger nailing is when I'm using an incorrect angle with the rod. What size rod are you using? What amp setting?Last edited by snoeproe; 03-22-2014 at 10:19 PM.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:I never get arc blow...this was just the one time that it happened with nearly every rod...I striked up and then boom...finger nailing...then rod would long arc...arc would go all over the place...big mess! 1/8th rod...bout 130amps which is pretty hot for a 1/8th 6013...Il rub them with a a damp cloth tommorow...I'm guessing it was that batch of rods...Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Reply:Actually Jay was back just last week or so commenting on someones post and he was quite civil about it. Shame some members here have to go and try and pick fights even when the member hasn't done anything or even commented in a thread. Lets all try and be nice now....No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:Arc blow can be lessened by running your cables as close to each other as possible. On the other hand finger nailing is sometimes the result from damp or wet rods.
