hi everyone i just started tig welding and the reason im doing tig is because where i live its a sought after skill when i try and apply for a job they only want combo welders and its mostly stick and tig .... well the jobs i think are worth applying for .... im not into the whole manufacturing small parts or anything like that .... honestly im trying to improve my skills to hopefully start working on the keystone project .... my uncles are putting me through some hectic training and im trying to my best to learn their techniques and also to gain some insight on the internet on what other welders have tried and gone through ...... i can weld mig structural and stick structual... i moved on to stick 6g carbon and i can pass a visual inspection and im stuck on tig 6g ...... 1g and 2g went by not so great im still a bit unsure on the welds but my uncles deemed it fit to pass and moved me on to 6g ...... i guess i have alot of questions mostly with the type of tungsten and wire i should get and buy i have been using Tungsten Electrode Red 2% Thoriated 1/8" X 7" but have always wondered what the difference was with the rest of them and the type of wire i use is er70s-2 1/8 sa33043 the places i buy these materials is pretty damn expensive and ive found different variations on this material for alot cheaper my question is what kind of material should i buy and use for practice welding schedule 80 and schedule 40 pipe carbon pipe should i stick to er70s-2 and Tungsten Electrode Red 2% Thoriated 1/8" ?is it acceptable to use ER70S-6 1/8 X 36" Tig Welding Rod for those applications ? what do you guys recommend?

Reply:Well where he posted the original question was 6 years old. We can fix that however. Poof... New thread where his question can get the attention it deserves. To the OP, if you want the title changed, just PM me and let me know what you want me to change it to..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:A list of your tig equipment would be very helpful. Otherwise stay with the 2% red for steel, as well as ER70-S2 filler. With experience you can weld with 1/8 rod and tungsten in all thicknesses, but you might want to supplement with smaller rod and tungsten. Over a lifetime you will go through thousands anyway.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
Reply:Actually I find that the most all around size for both rod and tungsten is 2.4mm (3/32in).Stick with 2% Thoriated, it does everything well (unless you have an AC transformer machine).Don't worry too much anyway. As Shovelon correctly put it you will inevitably end up with various types and sizes of consumables and small parts such as ceramic cups.
