It's been literally months since I've touched a grinder, let alone my welder. Half of that has to do with moving here recently and the other half is the heatwave after heatwave here in GA. Being that I'm an avid metal recycler, when my boss said we were taking down two 4'x6' metal guards in favor of a new plywood wall, I hopped all over this stuff to get my hands on it. Its made out of 1x1 angle and a 2 big sheets of 1/16 expanded metal. I got to work last night cutting out the old welds and getting it down to useable pieces. First by breaking the tacks holding in the expanded metal to the angle iron frame. Then cutting the old welds off the frame. The plan is to use the angle and expanded metal to make two end tables. The mesh will be welded inside the angle for the tops, and I'll make some wood inserts to be mounted below the mesh to accent the metal. Also I have about 10-15 pieces of 2"x1/4" round tubing that I'll be using to create a tv stand, which I will also accent with the mesh and wood to match the end tables. This should be a fun project and hopefully I can stay on this til finish ( I have a terrible case of "project ADD")Keep checking back for the updates and thanks for looking!Last edited by dbales; 07-28-2012 at 11:59 AM.Northern Tool MIG/Flux coreWEL-BILT 4 1/2 angle grinderYou gotta start somewhere!
Reply:Interesting idea. You might want to also think about some sort of glass or plexi over the mesh. Dirt/dust collects in and around expanded metal and the table will be a royal PITA to clean once this happens. At least with open mesh stuff falls thru. With the wood underneath, it will just trap stuff like a magnet..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:Very good advice. I already subconsciously thought of a remedy for this. I wanna make the wood removeable for cleaning purposes and if I ever decide to convert it to patio furniture in the future.Northern Tool MIG/Flux coreWEL-BILT 4 1/2 angle grinderYou gotta start somewhere!
Reply:I wish I could find some cool stuff like that to reclaim the metal from. I to have had very limited time in the shop recently due to the NW GA heat. Been way to hot out in my shop and no one is paying me to b out there.Making as much progress as a one legged duck in the middle of a pond, just going in circles.
Reply:dbales; I know it's off subject, but I was wondering, when you posted your pics how did you get the caption between the pics? I tried to do it on my post but couldn't figure it out.

Reply:Got a little work done tonight. I got the mitre cuts done on the top and shelf pieces, cut the mesh to size, and squared up the ends on the 2" tubing (I had more to do, but the 1/4" thick tubing wasn't playing around with the cutoff wheels on my grinder and I ran out of them). Here's the pics:Should be doing some mock-up and tack up tomorrow, as long as it isn't 100 degrees, so stay tuned.Last edited by dbales; 07-30-2012 at 03:27 AM.Northern Tool MIG/Flux coreWEL-BILT 4 1/2 angle grinderYou gotta start somewhere!
