I'm wanting to make a couple of fuel transfer tanks for use on the farm but I wanted to find out how you can get the DOT stamp on it. I know it has to be pressure tested, mostly to 90 PSI so its not something that's extremely difficult but wanted to see what was involved in getting that stamp, if it was possible for an individual.
Reply:Please dont have anyone around when you pressurize a transfer tank to 90 PSI.  I dont think you will like the results.   Most actual fuel tanks get tested at 3 to 5 PSI or with vacuum. My suggestion is to buy some at tractor supply.  They are cheap.   If you mean DOT stamp for Gasoline, that is a whole different world and talking big money.Either way, if you are hauling more than 110 gallons, you need a Hazmat endorsement on your license.  Just some things to think about.Multimatic 200Ellis 1800Haberle S225 9" cold sawMM 300;  Spoolmate 30A w/ WC-24TB 302GDynasty 280 DX Tigrunner
Reply:I would not pressure test a flat tank to 90 psi, unless you want a odd looking and most likely blown up tank, I do not know the rules but my son builds oil field tanks than there pressure test is I believe under 10 pounds  and possibly even under 5 pounds,  there just looking for leaks not a pressure vessel,   http://www.telsafe.org/Documents/NTS...pdfAgruculture usually has some different rules than commercial best to check with your state DOT and see what they say, there is thread on a trucker board that seems to have some general info, http://www.thetruckersreport.com/tru...fuel-tank.htmlliability wise it may just be wiser to buy the tank from an approved manufacture, and have the little tag all ready on itwith all the revenue generation rules the government has to day, It may be the best route to go, and it appears diesel can be up to a little over 119gallons, but gasoline only up to 8 gallons in a container and then no more than 440 pounds of it,  and the can must be metal and UL approved, unless your tanks meets some other requirements and you have a CDL, not 100% sure what all applies on agriculture tho, it appears manufactures have to do a drop test on there tank design to pass DOT regulations, from some of the reading I did,  http://atitank.com/products/dot-refueling-tanksapparently where one can find the rules,  http://www.ehow.com/list_6788037_dot...sel-tanks.htmlGood luckLast edited by Farmerboy; 04-04-2014 at 03:15 PM.

Reply:I use an old acetylene gauge to test tanks. At 5-psi, soapy water and paint brush. Attached ImagesDon’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:At work we make various transfer and storage tanks that range in size and store various fuels and liquids.. All of our tanks are leak tested at 3psi. We pressurize the tank and then pour soapy water over the welds to detect leaks. Anything that requires a DOT tag we outsource. Its not worth the hassle for us.
Reply:You're bringing out the safety nazi's!Sometime this year I plan on building a 200 gallon, rectangle transfer tank. It will be very heavy duty, with lifting lugs. I want it for my F350, for when I snow plow. I just HATE going to the fuel station. Oh, and I don't have hazmat on my CDL, and I don't plan on placarding my truck either. Sorry, just being honest."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"

I have been in the aftermath of every major hurricane since 03 as an emergency fuel supplier. I have set and filled hundreds of temporary tanks and I am sure I have bypassed a reg or 20 somewhere along the way.Just dont test a tank at 90psi.  I dont want to hear about a stick-man Darwin award.
