Reply:You demonstrated why I hate magnets like those.  they are a real waste of time.  If you simply laid the metal on edge and tacked single plane tacks that allowed some fine adjustments you wouldn't have to continually keep going back to check on the magnet end.  They would be tacked and done.  When you have the other end leg tack in similar fashion and everything square and parallel then you can tack your second plane and be assured all was good. it is simply a matter of reducing steps checking and rechecking yourself.Loved the song.
Reply:Fexal, you gotta get some clamps,  Some clamps and some cut offs of some big angle and a square and some more clamps and a jig or two. I was cringing just watching you tack. Reply:I pissed hobart off on facebook awhile back when i told them those magnets are only good for being thrown in the trash and collecting all of the grinding dust out of the air. They didnt seem to like my comments to well, seriously think about expansion and contraction and just tack appropriately, it takes time to learn how metal will shrink but its worth understanding the mechanics of it all.I forgot how to change this.
Reply:you should be cross measuring too. checking parallel, does not ensure square. ( now granted i skimmed thorugh the vid and checked in about the first tack again) but checking corner to corner you can get them close, tack it and shift them around to get it where you want it and then tack the crap out of it to lock it in. i have done it, and it works great for stuff you cannot clamp down, or is free floating.Offering CNC Plasma cutting and welding projects.Follow me on facebook https://www.facebook.com/nobigdeal.fabSupport those that support WW.
Reply:I'd get some angle cut and make a Jig on the bench, then Clamp the box onto the angle.I only use magnets to hold small parts whilst i tack, Never in place of Clamps or a Decent Jig
Reply:They ended up being square and did pull out noticeably. I do have clamps but for some reason I didn't use them. I have no idea why........... I wasn't thinking is why.........Every time I post on YouTube I get an email about the music......... They block me in some countries because of it.......... Reply:Fexal..Like others have said...You need to get or make some clamps, also being able to use the heat to pull parts back into square, if you parts are set square first, then welded without fixturing, they will be pull out of square....Lincoln pro mig 180Lincoln Square Wave Tig 300/wp 20/home built water cooler Victor, Purox, Harris, O/A welding/cutting setupsVintage Craftsman drill pressVintage Craftsman/Atlas 12"x 36'' lathe7''x 12'' w/c band saw Everlast 140 st
Reply:Throw the magnets in the trash, tack your corners, measure corner to corner, tap tap to adjust, weld one corner, check again, adjust as needed, and weld.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."

Reply:Oh the agony! No love for magnets around here. Magnets are GREAT!! They hold paper down in a drafty shop, they hold crayon artwork to refrigerators, you can put small screwdrivers against the side of metal cabinets, tie a rope to them to retrieve lost lug-nuts from storm drains, I bet Jackie Chan could take out half a dozen bad guys with that particular rig! You can wrap them in copper wire and make your own 10K generator, (with enough of them!).  City of L.A. Reply:Like your choice of music. Pipe or bar clamps are handy. Check craigs list and flea markets. Here's a Bessey welding clamp for 90's, costly but are nice to work with if you can justify the price. Reply:I see you are in Austin. If you want some big pieces of angle to use as right angles to clamp to, you are more than welcome to come out to the shop and get some. I have plenty and you are welcome to them. I am west of Georgetown on FM 3405, not that far from you.

Reply:I use magnets like those.  Love 'em!    They can be helpful in combat with my nemesis - gravity.  I use them to set up the pieces and hold the parts steady while I check for square and alignment and apply clamps.  As the clamps are applied I check for square and alignment again and adjust if necessary.  Once all is clamped up tight and alignment verified once more I take out the magnets and put 'em back on the side of the tool cabinet where they belong - while  welding.   Then, and only then, do I start tacking.  Exceptions: I may  occaisionally put on a tack or two with just the magnets on the metal, when alignment is not critical and some movement from thermal contraction can be tolerated or when getting a clamp on the parts is especially difficult.  But once tacked I rely only on clamps to retain position and alignment.  - MondoMember, AWSLincoln ProMIG 140Lincoln AC TombstoneCraftsman Lathe 12 x 24 c1935Atlas MFC Horizontal MillCraftsman Commercial Lathe 12 x 36 c1970- - - I'll just keep on keepin' on.
Reply:I thyink almost everyone tries them once. The only people that I have ever heard them work for are the types that cruise through life with nothing ever going wrong for them. That sure aint me. Mine sits under the welding table I think. Back where all the useless little cutoffs , chunks of mangled garbage and grinder crap live. Maybe I'll fish em out , clean em up and gift them to someone I dont like. As pointed out, Christmas is just round the corner......lolMike
Reply:I have a Harbor Freight horizontal band saw and use one as a moveable weight.  It works better than the adjustable springy thing!  Best  Bob

Reply:For the large 90 deg. clamps, I got one of the Northern Tool clamps.  This one is the heavy one, about 23 lbs. weight, so it won't move much (I think they may have a ligher-weight one, might be too light).  It was $50, about 1/2 the price of the Bessey's.  I haven't seen one of the Bessey's in person, so I can't compare the quality.  I've used the NT clamp on a few projects and it seems to be OK.  I checked the squareness and it was dead-on 90.http://www.northerntool.com/shop/too...3562_200403562
