Reply:In welding, penetration is the name of the game.

Reply:Good stuff guys. Very helpful thread  i was reading that to calculate how much amps u need for a weld, u need 1 amp/.001inch. which means, if im welding .156 inch (4mm) steel tubing(butt weld), then i need 156 amps.....

Reply:I would see no issue, just remove the rust and paint. I have welded over 1" with a 200 amp wire machine.... key is multipass.TOOLS AND TOYSSMAW Mid States Inc. Reply:211 is an OK wire, used within its limits.0.045" NR-211 wire, used with a machine with enough amperage and by an operator with enough skills, is capable of welding 3/16" or 1/4" thick steel.(note: NR211 has workpiece thickness limitations of 5/16" thick workpieces for wires 0.045" and smaller, and 1/2" thick workpieces for wires 0.068" and thicker.  This is directly from Lincoln, it does not matter how much machine you have or how 'good' you are.  If you exceed those workpiece thickness limitations and there is ever an 'issue', all liability will fall on you.  )But I would not reach for 211 for a motor-vehicle application (including a trailer), as the wire has no rated impact properties (not required for an AWS E71T-11 wire).  Pretty much every road I've ever driven on has some sort of bump somewhere, none have ever been 100% 'smooth'. All of this info is available if you RTFM.  In this case, the Lincoln catalog(s), which list wire/weld properties and recommendations, as well as suggested parameters.  The best laid schemes ... Reply:@ FlyingJ - Are you experienced in using flux core?  Would not recommend .045 in NR-211 for your trailer.  Explore Lincoln's Innershield NR-233.  All position FCAW-S, DCEN electrode rated to AWS E71T-8 and D1.8 seismic with improved elongation % over NR-211.  NR-232's typically used in hull plate and stiffener welding on ships/barges, general plate fab, and machinery parts.  Think s-t-r-e-t-c-h and cyclical vibrations.  Not sure if your MIG gun's configured to push a 1/16in (1.6mm) wire.  However, your machine has the juice to run this wire at 18V/220A.A few of our CWIs and FCAW-S experienced pros should be able to weigh in and give you some assistance."Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi
Reply:Ahhh, you  have a 'big boy' machine. If you 'need' to run an FCAW wire, look into something in the 'big boy' T-8 class (E71T-8) like the mentioned Lincoln NR-232.  There are a whole bunch of 'decent' T-8 FCAW wires from the 'big-names' (Lincoln, ESAB, Hobart/McKay) that would be able to do the job at hand.  The best laid schemes ...
