gah!!! just when I think I have all my ducks in a row! I have this welder, http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...revival-threadsupposed to go on this truck,  http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...me-nuts!-Gearsand now all of the sudden, I get a call last night. . . "hey you wanted a maxstar 150 right?" Yepgot one. come have a beer and take a look.perfect. ill take it.well, after a few beers, turns out that where the maxstar came from, there is also an old ford with a classic III D on it with custom bed, and fully tooled out other than what pipe-stands my beer-buddy already bought.I go look at the rig today. HOLY CRAP! sure, its a 97 ford f350, with a classicIIID on it, so a bit "old", but dang, its set up pretty nice. . . .and cheaper than I can rig out the cummins with my sa200. . . . .decisions, decisions.so basically, is there anybody that can talk enough smack about the ford 7.3 or the classicIIID to scare me away from this thing? looks like a good starter-upper to me, and if the new LINCOLN fails, I could throw on my old LINCOLN. PLEASE TRY AND TALK ME OUT OF THIS!btw, I fired up the maxstar, and it runs great! needs a little love to look good thoughbosses stuff:trailblazer 325maxstar 200my stuff:sa 200fronius transpocket 180100 amp Lincoln w/f97 f350 DITKevin
Reply:The 7.3 is bullet proof, the welder I know nothing about, and the truck itself is a hideous brick on wheels. You're welcome, and if you insist on paying me, I'll just take that little bitty maxstar of your hands Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk

Reply:jeez! bunch of drama! been on the phone all night it seems! so, the welder is bought, but the truck+bed and whats left in it is still up for grabs. I started it today, seems good. gunna test-drive tomorrow and see if I cant find something wrong with it.really upset about losing the classicIIId. my sa200 should fit in the hole though. . . .if I can get the dang thing working. stupid me should have wrote the check today. Reply:I had a 99 f350 with a 7.3. with an sa-200 in the back. Fantastic truck. If you can get one rigged out already, you can start welding right away instead of farting around rigging up a dodge. For sure you will be tweaking things on your truck to the way you like to work and the tools you carry, but that takes a lot less time than building a bed and rigging a truck out from scratch. I would go with the ready set up. The 7.3 is, as dcoffmanjr says, bulletproof. Just my 2 cents.
Reply:For what its worth my 97 7.3 has 417 thou and my brothers 01 7.3 has 471 thou. neither has ever had anything but regular service. To ride, shoot straight, and speak the truth. Reply:7.3 was the last good diesel Ford built for a long time, the 6.7's seem to be doing OK. You can't go wrong with the old 7.3 though, kinda gutless but they just keep on pulling, might take a while to get up to highway speed but it will do whatever you need it too without complaining.
Reply:truck is mine. machine is his, my sa200 gen is now complete from motor shop, just gotta bolt it back together. I appreciate the advice guys seriously. iv've been a little dramatic with trucks and machines for, well, since I joined but I believe its all settled nowthe truck is really nice. beat up, but moves great, shifts better and is mechanically sound so far. I chased the only spot on the driveway where it sat back to the leaking classic IIId lol. guy took great care of the truck. fresh grease on all ball-joints even, bosses stuff:trailblazer 325maxstar 200my stuff:sa 200fronius transpocket 180100 amp Lincoln w/f97 f350 DITKevin

Reply:my worst fear, at this point, is somebody recognizing the truck. . . . .it is a sensitive subjectto anybody that may know it, I will say, it is going to good hands, I take good care of my stuff, it is being bought fair and square, above our agreed on price, and I can only HOPE to use it as well as the original owner.bosses stuff:trailblazer 325maxstar 200my stuff:sa 200fronius transpocket 180100 amp Lincoln w/f97 f350 DITKevin
Reply:Good looking rig. Maybe set up as a rig welder. Lots of space in the boxes. Reply:Did Ford have a turbo on the 97 7.3? I know the early 7.3 didn't have a turbo. 2002 was the last full year for the 7.3. Reply:yep. turbo, direct injection 7.3. to me, its the 5 gear manual that makes it awesome. its mine, and the hole in it fits my sa200 perfectly. . . .along with the truck, I ended up with 2 oxy bottles, 1 acetylene bottle, hose, lead, torches, and a ton of stainless purge fittings. im stoked.bosses stuff:trailblazer 325maxstar 200my stuff:sa 200fronius transpocket 180100 amp Lincoln w/f97 f350 DITKevinSounds like a good score. Reply:Take it!  The 97 year 7.3 truck was probably the best ford truck ever built!Best chassis, suspension, tested and proven for many years. Then you get the powerstroke 7.3 which is one of the best navistar ever put out!  The transmission is the only weak link.*edit*, I see you mentioned it has the manual trans. No worries about the trans than.
Reply:For those asking, 94.5 was the first year ford put a turbo on the 7.3 and very poorly at that, we have one...95 was the first year for the powerstroke diesel which is the same 7.3 they used all the way up to 03 when they switched over to the 6.blow. The early 7.3 powerstrokes had better forged rods where the later ones had powdered rods. The early powerstrokes just lack an intercooler which can be added to help performance.Pretty much any problems with the 95-03 7.3 can be fixed with cheap o-rings. Some do have some injector trouble now and then but that is minor.
Reply:If you don't already have one, add a suicide knob to the steering wheel. Half turn of play in the steering wheel is within specification for these hogs. Even going down a straight road you're constantly turning. Or are they like Saabs, they last so long, they are usually dragging some of their entrails?

Reply:That is an idle control unit from a 7.3 ambulance.  That 7.3 has plenty of pep waiting to be tapped. I had one with a big air filter, straight 4" exhaust and a chip. Plenty of power for a work truck. Reply:Yeah it could be an idle control like mentioned. Where does it plug in? Looks like at the OBD port? That is one clean truck! Nice score.
