Are there better types of Mig welders for outside work. I do a lot of stick welding in my garage with my Lincoln Ranger and some off site welding. I was wondering if a Mig welder would be nice to add to my tool collection but was concerned about using it outdoors. I have read something about the gas shield and how wind could effect it. So I guess my real question is are there Mig welders that don't use gas?I saw a youtube clip on a new Lincoln welder called Activ8. It didn't look like it had a gas unless it was a small tank in the case. It was a wire feed welder but looked cool.
Reply:Flux Core Wire is the answer to what you are wanting. Most newer wire feeds will run it.
Reply:Well the "G" stands for GAS, so no- there are no MIG welders that don't use gas Technically the welding machines referred to as MIG machines are Wire Welders: they use a roll of wire- either Solid wire with Gas- Mig/GMAWor a roll of Fluxcore- FCAWYou could get away with running Fluxcore outside but anything using gas not so much since the wind will cause problems. The Activ8 is a Wire Feeder that uses a separate power source i.e. Ranger. It does not have a small gas bottle inside but uses an external bottle if you want to run MIG, just like the shop mig machines.http://www.lincolnelectric.com/asset...ature/E861.pdfEd Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge
Reply:I run a Lincoln Ln25 feeder off my ranger gxt for both flux and gas. I run gas most days and just shield the wind in that direction, sometimes a pain in the a@@, but works rather well. I do alot of field work and you have to deal with the weather. Either way, a nice feeder will be your best Friend It will save you huge amounts of time too!! Attached Images |
