Reply:If your a Ford guy hold on to that 7.3 every diesel they put out since then is a nightmare. Repair bills that will make a grown man cry. 7.3s are very sought after lots of Ford guys in my area are driving south to find them or changing to dodge. Good looking rig.
Reply:Yep, you are going to love that 7.3 Powerstroke! I bought my 2000 new. It just turned over 200,000 miles and I'm not EVER getting rid of it!!

Reply:Very nice, I have the 97 CC and converted it to Dually, 7.3 has been good. Oil filter is Motorcraft FL 1995 @ Walmart under $10.  If you don't want to pay for Syn. use Rotella 15/40 and the fuel filter every 15K is 30-50 bucks.    your truck but my .02, get some under body boxes and get the welder sideways up on a rack behind the cab so you can still slide some material under it. I have a very similar machine and I am toying with the idea of dropping it into a vented Grenlee gang box for security and weather protection. I bet a used one is cheaper than a canvas cover LOL.   Once again , very nice truck.  Also Check out Bill Hewitt on Powerstrokehelp.com  Excellent site and great maintenance tips and videos."Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251   Syncrowave 300   30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200   1 short hood    SA250    SAM 400
Reply:If your use to having a s10 and now have diesel with a plow. Plowing is the fastest to sending a truck to meet its maker. Don't take on to much plowing jobs if its gonna be your primary work vechile. I've seen even one bad winter destroy more than one brand new truck. Easy does it with plowing, diesels don't break stuff when they get stuck plowing they annihilate stuff.

Reply:Yep the 7.3 is the best. A good 99-03 with the 7.3 can sell for more than the newer trucks with the 6.0. However a 10 year old truck is gonna need stuff so when you need help come on over to the FTE Diesel Forums, lots of help over there, many of those guys know more than some of the Ford techs. You don't want just anyone working on a Powerstroke, even some dealerships are bad. Just one example, the cam sensor was recalled and the replacement one causes cyls 3 & 8 to fail a CCT even though there is nothing wrong. So lots of #3 & #8 injectors get replaced for no reason, even by Ford techs.Thats just one example, but if you hang out at FTE or even The Dieselstop (same crowd) you will be in the know and avoid shelling out for mis diagnosed repairs. How many miles on her?Last edited by bigb; 07-30-2012 at 08:39 PM.Miller Challenger 172Miller Thunderbolt AC/DC 225/150Miller Maxstar 150 STLVictor 100CVictor JourneymanOxweld OAHarris O/ASmith O/A little torchNo, that's not my car.

Reply:Diesels dont typically overheat the engine with a plow on because they tend  to run cold in the winter anyways most people in the north east buy a grill cover to block the radiator so they stay warm going down the road. A larger add on tranny cooler is a good idea unless its a stick truck. thejohn you are right but reasonable driving is the key word getting stuck at the wrong time can sometimes lead to a minor freak out  and a truck in pieces. Only saying it cause I'm just as guilty as the next and I am a tech so to add insult to injury I get to fix my own stupidity. Bigb you make a good point also I was shop foreman at a dealership and had to finally leave because I couldnt stand seeing people pay 75.00 pr/hr to have guys work on their vechiles that I wouldnt want working on a wheel barrel. Dealership certainly doesn't always mean better.Last edited by KD Welding; 07-30-2012 at 08:54 PM.

Reply:Nice Truck!I have a '02 F350 (SRW) also with the 7.3I have right at 120,000 miles on it. I bought it new when I heard they were about to swap engines. I would change the fuel filter on it unless you know when it was serviced last..MillerMatic 212, Lincoln Precision TIG 225, Hypertherm 45XP
Reply:Nice truck.  I'm not a Ford guy (Dodge/Cummins is my trucks), but we have a '99 F350 that my partner drives.  It's a 4X4 single wheel crew cab XLT Lariat.  We got it about 3 years ago, really cheap from a salvage, with 284,000 miles on it.  I'm doing an out of town job right now, and have been driving it, for the extra room taking 2 other guys with me.  It rolled over 356,000 miles on the way home today.  It's not the prettiest looking truck you've ever seen, but all that's been done to it since we've had it was replace 2 injectors, and replace the rear end.  One of the front leaf springs broke and we replace it also.  I don't think it was very well cared for before we got it, it belonged to a landscaping company best we could tell.  But that 7.3 is a very dependable motor, and it has the automatic transmission also.  It doesn't do it often, but we have hauled a Case 580 backhoe with it.  It won't pull with my '99 Cummins/5 speed, but it really does pull pretty well, especially considering the miles it has on it.  Ford really ruined their trucks when they went away from the 7.3 in my opinion.  I've driven a couple of chipped 6.0's.  They were impressive, but wouldn't hold together.
Reply:Keep the oil clean in that engine, it fires the injectors. Clean oil = long life for the injectors. My last truck was a 7.3 powered F-350 and still ran like a sewing machine when I sold it with 250k on it.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."Congrats!I have had 2 F-350s, the first one was a 1995 gas, the second one a 7.3L 1999.  I love these trucks - you'll be happy with that rig for a long time.Hobart LX235Victor 250 Oxy-Acetylene Rig (welding and cutting)Bobcat 773F-350, 1999, 4x4, 16' 10K# trailerOutdoor Wood Burner - 10 cords/year

Reply:If you're not aware of the prior service record I'd change out all the fluids and get them on your schedule.  (I didn't catch the mileage on your truck).  Tranny, tcase, F/R diffs and of course oil.  Look at the brake fluid, PS fluid and coolant as well.  Pulling the fluids will let you inspect what's behind and and covers to see to what degree parts are wearing as evidence by the metal mush on the magnets. For oil, you don't need a synthetic if you're running regular intervals (proven by doing oil analysis).  But if you're in cold climates that 5w makes a difference, especially in winter.  (Un)Fortunately the 5w only comes in synthetic so you end up paying for it.  Here in TX I run 15w40 year round.  Especially need it in the summer but no issues in the winter.  I think it would be in your best interest to send off an oil sample right away to see how that engine is working internally.Last edited by Monica; 07-31-2012 at 12:48 PM.Lincoln AC225 and CartLincoln WeldPak HD and CartOne hand

Reply:Great find bought one for my son 3 years ago paid $2000.00. I had maintained this truck '99 F250 Super Duty 7.3 since it was new. Put flatbed and custom boxes at 2yrs old. It now has 441,000 miles was used for hauling show horses and feed. Friend wanted new truck they offered $2000 trade in. Keep up service will last long time. Change oil every 7500 miles with air, fuel, and oil filters. We use 15w40 Rotella and 2 quarts Lucas oil treatment since break in. Rebulit starter and alternater new hoses and belts every year. Texas heat hard as your cold. Only draw back is E4OD trans is torque convertor on 4th transmission now, we pull tractors and impellments with this truck. Engine has never had valve covers off except for over head reset.

Reply:7.3, the last good diesel ford ever had!I love my 7.3! Have any problems or questions with it look me up.
Reply:Oh and check your airbox!    run your finger around the inside of the "CLEAN" side of the filter.    If you can feel any traceable amount of grit or dust replace it IMMEDIATELY!    all my 7.3's have the Donaldson AIS setup from ford.   Its a really robust filter setup. If you do the brakes make sure you grease the ever loving heck out of the slides with a silicone based brake slider pin lubricant.      do not use a petroleum based lubricant as it will swell the seals and make them NFG.    My f-350 runs heavy and tows often and for the last 410,000 miles it has rarely exceeded 50K on a set of front pads.   Often times less than 30K.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
Reply:On the front caliper brackets, I made the pin holes about a 64th oversize and lubed the snot out of them with Sil Glide [ame]http://www.amazon.com/Sil-Glyde-Silicone-Lubricating-Compound-Ounce/dp/B0054DWS1W[/ame] , never had a problem after that. Don't use never seeze, it will harden up and you will need to put the hot wrench on the bracket to get the pins out. I am with Duallie, I had to do the fronts once a year even with the Wagner Severe Duty pads, which I highly recommend.Last edited by TozziWelding; 08-11-2012 at 10:14 AM.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:I agree, neversieze should never be used on any brake hardware! Check and grease all the pins all around.I use the permatex brake lube. It actually works like it should! One of the things I did on my 7.3 was a dead head fuel fix. Makes the motor run much quieter, smoother, and really helps with the low speed throttle "on/off" stuff. If anyone is interested or you just want to stalk me my "truck" thread is here: http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/11...and-stuff.html
Reply:I bought a kind of project truck about this time last year. A 2000 F250 with the 7.3. Very high mileage but it runs strong. So far I've had to change a wheel bearing, two brake calipers. Still need to do the ball joints and replace a rear brake caliper and will be changing the rear diff fluid this week. All in all its a great truck and other posters are spot on with the popularity and reliability of the 7.3.Lincoln Squarewave 175Ex-aircraft sheet metal guy
