My son's woodshop teacher is having them build a soapbox derby car. My son volunteered my services to weld the front axles up. This is the only part of the project I am involved in. They are forming the car out of wood and handlaying fiberglass over it. Our town has a derby once a year.Anyways, this picture is of my joint that I did autogeneously in the flat position. This weld will be in the vertical position on the car. The welds in the horizontal position I have welded with filler. This vertical weld was just to close up the end of the tube. It was actually unneccessary to do.So what I was shooting for was a consistent bead size, wetting out the top of the joint evenly so as to not leave a series of copes that makes it look jagged and for general appearance. I am not good enough yet to make my beads look perfectly stacked. My consistency with TIG is hard for me due to my inability to hold small objects with any steadiness. I have a hard time holding a pencil or a pen. My wife buys that really fat pens for me to use. Kinda makes me feel like the short bus kid that uses the extra fat crayolas. lolFeel free to comment, good or bad, and add suggestions.I was using my Lincoln PrecisionTig 275, DC-, no pulse, footpedal, 200amps max, and 3/32 E3 tungsten from AirGas. Never used it before, but I do like how it holds a point!!!! Reply:Maybe one of those TIG pens would help add a little thickness to your filler rod making it easier to hold steady. Your weld looks great. Ought to last forever. Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk 2Hobart Stick mate LX AC/DCHarris O/A outfit

Reply:Weld looks great to me.  As for the holding small things, have you thought about modifying your TIG torch so that it's easier for you to hold?  I think a bit of Sugru (https://sugru.com/) (I have no relation to the company, nor interest in their profit margin...but I've used this stuff and it's a good product) applied to it to make it thicker and comfortable for you and you'd be good to go.--Wintermute"No man's knowledge here can go beyond his experience." - John Lockewww.improvised-engineering.comManufacturer Agnostic:Blood----------Sweat---------Tears----|------------------|----------------|----Lincoln Red, Miller Blue, Esab Yellow
