Anyone know anything about hardfacing by tig?    I've got some lawnmower blades that need sharpening.   I thought about building up the worn part before sharpening.   Anyone know of any good number or name of a tig filler for what I'm describing.    I guess mig would be OK also. ??
Reply:Tig isn't typically used for hardfacing because of, amongst others, the high heat input.Mig and stick would work fine, innershield even better.Depending on your local suppliers, there are a number of possible solutions. Why did you not mention stick? Will you buy a spool of hardfacing wire/ some lbs of hardfacing rods for just some lawnmower blades?
Reply:Hardfacing lawnmower blades has been discussed on a number of forums before, it always ends with the conclusion that any kind of welding, especially crack prone hardfacing, is a very bad idea. The tip of the blades is probably moving at well over 200mph, and you do not want a piece of the blade to let go and come flying at that speed.

Reply:I have done hardfacing with tig for wear parts with AH-2 and some stainless rods when I did matainence workNot any lawn implaments though ..would be a waste of time and money as has been pointed outSent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk 2Backed my CATMA over your CARMA oops clusmy me  What would SATAN do ?? Reply:X2 on not hardfacing high speed moving parts like your lawnmower blades. But, more generally, I have done TIG hardfacing on Ag components once before.  They were some chutes for some kind of bean planting machine.  the chutes or boxes were pulled through the soil.  They were made from 12 or 14 gauge sheet and there wasn't a hardfacing stick rod available that wouldn't vaporize the base metal.I was given some hardfacing TIG rod by a buddy of mine, probably a TIG or Oxy brazing rod in truth, that deposited a hard surface.  I used TIG to lay it down and that enabled me to keep from burning up the base metal and warping things.  I don't think it was strictly intended for ag equipment and abrasive wear, but it did the job.  It's worth mentioning that job was a money loser for me when it was all said and done.  Even getting the TIG rod for free, the work was much more time consuming than I estimated.Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector
Reply:I remember seeing a post where ZAP scrapped(cleaned off) some hardfacing stick rods electrodes and used those. Reply:well, it sounds like hardfacing isn't meant for high speed blades.   I used to lay stoody 35 on hammers in a tub grinder that ground chunks of hardened bakery dough..   I'd say those hammers were moving at high speed.  The bottom edge of the lawnmower blade is to thin for stick.   Don't really need a whole roll of wire.   That's why tig crossed my mind.   Figured two passes along bottom edge would save me from grinding alot of material off to get a good edge again.   i'll look for these other threads you guys were talking about.   Thanks everyone.
Reply:It's not so much that you can't hardface a mower blade.  It's that the risk vs. reward doesn't make sense to most of us.  Hardfacing hammer mills, crushers and the like makes sense.  The equipment is in an industrial environment, is often expensive to service, designed(hopefully) for the possibility of catastrophic failure, and the people around it are usually better equipped with PPE.Contrast that with the typical residential pushmower.  The blades are cheap($20 last I checked), the equipment deck is constructed of thin sheetmetal(and often rusted out/compromised) or even plastic in the newest mowers, and the people and pets in the vicinity aren't thinking about protection or wearing protective clothing.Adding mass to the end of the mower blade creates potential problems; improper welding(not necessarily by you,  but maybe someone else who reads this in the future), can introduce flaws, both of which could cause the mower blade to fail in a manner not expected or designed for by the manufacturer.  Weigh the risk of hurting someone in your family or neighbors against just sharpening the mower blade more often or replacing it when it's too worn to resharpen again.Just some food for thought...Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector
Reply:My personal experience:- lawn mower blades are NOT hardened- I have an obsolete mower with a very odd 30" mulching blade.- I used regular MIG to rebuild the wearing surface and rebalance the blade.- The repaired blade is still in sevice 3 years and 5 sharpeninigs later. So, without fuss and bother, spend the $20 for new blades if available. If not, general purpose filler will do fine.As with any use of power equipment, keep innocent bystanders at a safe distance, regardless of new, repaired, rebuilt or worn out equipment.Be wary of The Numbers: Figures don't lie,. but liars can figure.Welders:2008 Lincoln 140 GMAW&FCAW2012 HF 165 'toy' GTAW&SMAW1970's Cobbled together O/A

Reply:We use Stellite hard facing tig rods in the Navy to hardface valve seats, backseats, and inlays for silver seals.
Reply:I'll second stellite. I've probable tigged three tons of stellite 6 and 12. Place I use to work rebuilt feeder and discharge valves for a cellulose mill and we tigged the housings and valves with 3/16" stellite. I don't miss it one bit as we kept constant heat on the parts from start to finish usually 300°-600°. No fun in the summer. Back to the original topic, I personally wouldn't mess with hard facing a lawnmower blade as it's to cheap to just buy a new one.
Reply:I didn't realize blades were so cheap.    This mower is pretty expensive, but I saw them on ebay in quantities of 12.    I will tell the owner he ought to get new blades.   I'm almost finished with what I needed to do to it.   I should just get it out of my yard before anything happens to it.   My dog chewed up the seat on it last time, it cost me over a hundred dollars, had to update the seats safety switch also.   Anyway, it sounds like I got some good reccomendations for next time.     .Stellite tig rods sounds interesting.   I just always thought stellite was good for absorbing heat.    I'll also look into what mad welder 4 is talking about.  Thanks everyone.
Reply:Don't see so much of this lately. In the 60's & 70's there was a bunch of it done on brush hogs & highway mowers to save fuel & improve blade life. A thin band of high chrome brazing alloy was put on the bottom of the cutting edge to make the blade self sharpening like a plow shear. The material would be something like colmonoy 56 or stellite 6, and done with a torch and rod or powder brazing torch. I don't really know how it all worked out but the high chrome material is slippery so I expect some fuel was saved.Matt
Reply:I thought about hardfacing the blades on my bush hog since the blades are 100.00 a set ...but it says they are a high alloy steel So I might try it on the old set just for funSent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk 2Backed my CATMA over your CARMA oops clusmy me  What would SATAN do ??
