There is someone hiring and I would need to use 7018 rods. I haven't used 7018 for about a month. Would they let me use a piece of scrap metal to do a practice run or no?Edit: I'm uncertified and am still waiting for my results.

Reply:I would tell them that you need to get a feel for the machine you are using so you need to run a few beads first. Anyone that has really welded for a living will understand that no two machines are the same. I don't think there is anything wrong with saying "You got some scrap I can run a few beads on to figure this machine out".
Reply:most places i have been hired on do not some do but its rare ... then again these are my experiencesMiller Xmt 350Lincoln Ln-25Ahp 200xSmith Gas Mixer AR/HTig is my Kung FuThrowing down dimes and weaving aboutInstagram http://instagram.com/[email protected]
Reply:I was told to always ask for a practice piece to set up the machine.  The reason was to show that you're smart enough to realize not every machine runs the same.  Run a bead or two to get familiar, but don't waste the interviewers time.Edit...Looks like Arizona types faster than I do.My name's not Jim....
Reply:Thanks for the responses everyone!
Reply:asking to run a practice bead to see how the machine runs and to get relaxed is not an unreasonable request. like boostin said, all machines aren't alike.i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla
Reply:I feel it's a reasonable request, but in my experience it's very rare to get a practice run, however this is for coded welding, being an uncertified welding position they may be more lenient.
Reply:when i applied at a production shop i didnt get anything but a tacking plate, when i applied at a structural place they pointed me in the direction of the scrap bin. even when we go in for testing for cwb cert they let us us scrap to feel out the machine.
Reply:I would, where do you live?
Reply:I'd say 98% of all the tests I've taken were in testing facilities. I can think of numerous times the tech would take me to the booth, and there would be scrap metal in the booth. Majority of the time the tech didn't show up with the coupons for 15 to 20 minutes latter. Quite a few times the tech would show up with meters to clamp on the leads, if the machine wasn't set within manufacture specs, test over, you don't even get a chance to weld on the coupons!Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:Thanks.I'm just worried that I might not do well since I haven't done stick for about 1 and a half months and I don't have any welding machines at home. Is this a normal worry?
