Time to vent ,So today it came to a head. The boss (AKA @(*#)^@%*&@^ick head!!!!!)  decided he's going to tell me how to weld! I was adding a 2 x 6 "C" channel to a stub of existing 2"x 8" "C" channel . The channels were web to web with about 12" overlap. I was using 5/32 6011 because of the heavy scale. Even though I prepared/ground-down the area well ,there was still some bad spots. The joint was also a poor fit with some gaps and the web on the existing channel was obviously thinner than the new stock. I look up and there he is - eyes closed - tack welding the new "C" onto the stub! Are you freaking kidding me! Now what was a marginal gap to start with is just a mess.Anyway... I start running the bead at about 175 amps down hill when he starts giving me an ear full of how a downhill bead is crap.Biting my tongue,I tell him you can't run 5/32 6011 up-hill on such a thin lap weld . "Well a good welder can". That was it for me - needless to say tomorrow is my last day there and good riddens !  I carry a 4G cert and am not about to weld anything but this guys head to the concrete. So the question is,- Is there anyone out there that would even try a weld like that? Up-hill?Gizzmo Syncrowave 250 CK aircooled tig
Reply:Weld said piece however you feel like, smack the azzhole over the head with it , then tell him if he recovers that it passed the bend test. Reply:Well I don't need the job as bad as he needs ME! LOL I'm a good welder and finding work won't be hard.  His competition has already offered me a position! The new channel has a 1/4" thick web and the existing something like 3/16. The strength is supposed to be in the top and bottom flange part of the "C" channel anyway. Originally Posted by CEPSure I would, with the correct joint prep. I truly believe there is more to down hill welding than the average guy understands. Have you ever seen how much iron down hill welders can carry? Amazing!
Reply:ida liketa see a pitcher..cant imagine running that hot on 3/16..next time i fire old betsy off ill try  that..me ida ground the scale and run some 7018..but i never hafta go fast to make some ahole happy, so i feel for ya..

Reply:I usually just look at them and say "okay". Don't stop looking at them, and don't do any work until they leave. Cut their crap off, and do what you wanted to do in the first place. Uphill, downhill, 6010, 7018, it doesn't matter to me. Best thing to do, though, is work for the man long enough until you can open your own place. I have been on my own for 8 years now.

Reply:Well I went in today and my foreman ( a truly great guy) filled me in on how the boss /owner came unhinged over my telling him where to get off (but he didn't dare to tell me face to face). So I packed up my tools and down the road I go! Later I got a call from one of my co-workers telling me how he(the boss) tried to weld up hill on the tank today. Just plain dog dirt and there wasn't anyone (me) there that could fix the mess. I just about pissed myself laughing! Justice, how sweet thy name! I've been battling with this guy over the way he pays prevailing rate and today I got a call from the Dept of labor regarding my inquiry.Yea, that call went..He did what?-NO he can't do that-No not ever-what else- NO he can't do that EITHER- don't worry about it I'm sending out the forms as soon as I get off the phone-what- yea have them call me too! His sphincter is gonna tighten up so much his eyes will pop out when he finds out how much he'll have to pay me and a lot of other guys, many of which don't even still work for him!All-in-All a good day !Now where did I put that OSHA number?...GizzmoLast edited by gizzmo; 03-27-2014 at 06:48 PM.Reason: added conversationSyncrowave 250 CK aircooled tig
Reply:A good trick that works with those kind of F sticks is to get them to look toward the stinger and give them a little eyeflash, usally does the trick of getting them out of the way .Miller xmt304,  Miller S22 p12, Miier Maxstar SD, Miller 252 w 30A, Miller super32p12, Lincoln Ranger 9, Thermal Arc 181I with spoolgun, Hypertherm 10000 ,Smith torches. Reply:That would aggravate me as well. I know my job, and I know the parameters.  I'm deaf, working retail for years and any time anyone talks to me, I have to stop whatever I am doing, and give them my 100% undivided attention to figure out what they want. I've gotten incredible numbers (and amounts) of heat for 'standing there doing nothing' because someone, be it a customer or co-worker interrupted me, and I had to find out what they wanted.  You just can't explain it to them, either, that you physically can't talk and work at the same time.I just let my prickly nature show, and bosses tend to leave me alone because I am hard to get along with (but I do the job better than anyone else.)  Once they figure those two things out, it's all good. Curse those 6 month rotations. Can't wait to get into a welding position. Next month hopefully.MillerMatic 252Miller Xtreme 625Miller Digital Elite
