Reply:Be careful what you call old, some one may get offended. We still use these for field structural work in factories where we can get a 480v hook up. Our company must have 10 of these still in operation. And they have a nickname - Red Robot.
Reply:I used one of those in metalshop in highschool. Great machine, had a really smooth arc.--Wintermute"No man's knowledge here can go beyond his experience." - John Lockewww.improvised-engineering.comManufacturer Agnostic:Blood----------Sweat---------Tears----|------------------|----------------|----Lincoln Red, Miller Blue, Esab Yellow
Reply:it's an engine drive welder powered by A/C rather than an engine! I think they also called them "Coffee Grinders"
Reply:The guys called them "hard hat" welders around here. There are still several in use in the shops.Dan
Reply:I refer to that kind of stick welder as a d!ck welder."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
Reply:Those things are phenominal welders. As good as the SA-200 is in the world of engine drives, these things are for electric driven. Essentially it's an SA-200 generator with a bigass motor attached to it.You didn't build that.'85 Miller AEAD-200LE

Reply:" Torpedo Welder' Pure DC arc , very smooth without the variables of a combustion engine. Used these in many of the plants we use to go to when installing conveyors and hand rails. Tozzi, are you serious about the Gravely, It really might work , that's a great idea. That would make it look real cool. if you mounted it to the deck would it qualify as a "Welding Rig" LOL"Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251 Syncrowave 300 30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200 1 short hood SA250 SAM 400
Reply:I f I can find one cheap I will, the PTO on the Gravely spins at 1250 on hi, and the 12 Horse Kohler has more than enough balls to power that. Usually they can be found cheap because they are old and 3 phase. I would mount it the long way and chase people around with it.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:I've got one of these sitting in my shop. We call them "Torpedo Welders" |
