I weld as a civilian for the Navy and am constantly amazed at the way they do some things. They are deathly afraid of spray arc welding and insist we pulse arc everything, even flats. The only way to be able to spray is if you use a 98% argon and 2% oxygen mix which is hard to come by. If we wanted to pulse it we could use 95%ar and 5%co2. It makes no sense to me. We were able to weld with the spray arc today and it ran like crap with the ar/ox mix. Why must it be such a hassle?CERTIFICATIONS:7018M- H.V.O10718M- H.V.O11018M- H.V.O9N10- H.V.O71T-1-HYM- H.O.V100S1 PULSE ARC 0,035- H.O.V100S1 PULSE ARC 0.045- H.O.VER70S-3 PULSE ARC 0.035 H.O.VER70S-3 PULSE ARC 0.045 H.O.VER5554- H.O.V

Reply:Frankly, this post makes absolutely NO SENSE.The OP lists a bunch of certifications, but doesn't seem to know what he's talking about. Is pulse arc not spray arc with pulse added?Spray arc can be achieved with a 92%Argon/8%CO2 mix (or thereabouts) or with a 98%Argon/2%O2 mix (the O2 mix is hotter). My optima pulser has programs for both the 98%Argon/2%CO2 mix and the 95%Argon/5%CO2 mix.An Argon/O2 mix or an Argon/CO2 mix is easily achieved with a mixer.  I do it all the time, and I'm sure the Navy has access to better equipment than I do.  Mixers are expensive, but once you get thru the initial setup cost, the gases are much more economical and they reduce the number of bottles (with different mixes) you need to keep on hand.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.

Reply:We do have mixers there genius. But we can't just use what we feel like using. We need to follow the procedure from the technique sheet for the process. If I were welding mufflers in my shed like you do I could change it. But I weld nuclear systems for submarines. I guess you are just smarter than I am. Reply:What sundown said is correct. for most welding procedures. What the OP needs to look at is the voltage settings.Spray pulse welding is a balance of weld voltage and gas type. also matched to what type of metal is being welded. Different model welders handle pulse welding differently. Some allow you to adjust all points of the pulse and some less. some are controlled by a computer and a welding program based on wire size and type of metal. If you think what you are being asked to do is all wrong. You can call Lincoln or Miller or ESAB or the wire manufacture. With out disclosing secrets you should be able to cross check your process and see if what you are being asked to do is in the design specs of the wire , gas and welding machine, Then use proper channels to get a correction. It would not be the first time an engineer  copied the wrong spec from one project to another.Caution. you may want your supervisor to set in on your calls. So you both don't get in trouble for disclosing something secret.
Reply:The smartest thing the OP said in both posts was...."I guess you're smarter than me."Oh, and BTW.  I DON'T weld mufflers in my shop, but I do know what spray arc welding is and how to achieve it (and it doesn't always require 98%Argon/2%O2)Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.
