I was hoping that the fabricators with special skills might be able to tell me how the metal legs on this table was fabricated?    And no, not talking about the welded mounting plates.  The edges are so perfectly clean on the arc-d legs it is hard to imagine pieces that were cutout as flat plate & welded together.  The surface finish also looks identical to hot rolled steel tubing with the mill scale.  Not a single visible grind mark and perfectly clean radius on the edge.     I'm dying to know how something might fabricated so perfectly.   An awesome work of art.  My wife would die if I could build something like it as our dining table.   The solid wood top is the easy part at this point!   Thoughts?http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/...stinOut-12.jpg

Reply:flat patterns, rolled sides, welded, detailed and patina. All in the fit, and polishing. What's funny to me, why do a killer job welding and detailing, then put a visible weld right next to it when it could have easily been done another way?Close up shows it, thats just blackened steel.  I like to do a more consistent even black.  This looks a little splotchy and not uniform.Last edited by drivethruboy54; 06-06-2012 at 12:29 AM.
Reply:I bet it is welded from the inside, that visible seam on the legs looks like it hasn't been welded.
Reply:If you look at the last pic, right at the top/middle, you can see a heat spot from the internal weld.
Reply:Those are very nice looking table legs.  Couple of questions? Is there an inner panel in the valley between the top two 'arms' ?I'm guessing not.Is there an end cap on the two two arms?I'm thinking autogenous TIG tacks from the inside, lots of them.... But that assumes an open valley access.Your thoughts?
Reply:My thoughts are some kind of backing strip attached to each of the side pcs and the end pcs formed and then plug welded or spot welded into place.
Reply:The big parts are laser cut, and the others are rolled. That is a very nice table leg set up.
Reply:The large side plates are laser cut. The ends are boxed with, likely, .11 ga plate and just hand placed and tac'd before fully welding. I doubt that radius needed to be rolled. Great looking stuff.
Reply:I second laser or hi-def plasma possibbly the end caps were profiled after on a mill to give the radius. The finish is not mill scale at all, looks like an applied dye of some type that is partially translucent. The upper and lower halves appear to be identical and like enough room to get inside to take them together. Reply:The smooth edges are likely plasma. Laser and water jets produce very nice, accurate parts....but show edge striations. Here is an untouched air plasma cut edge.....what it looks like when cut on a machine with good motion.  Powermax85 at 45 amps on 3/8" steel....much smoother than laser.Nice design on the table legs....gives me some ideas!Jim Colt  Hypertherm Attached Images
Reply:And as for the original posting above (how did they do that?), they could be using weld studs, with a whole bunch of small angle brackets and fasteners. Not totally easy, but it is do-able.  This thread got me thinking and doing a little bit of searching.  Sometimes the hardest part of life is finding inspiration and motivation...Check out http://shop.retro.net/This guys work is very good.  (Apologies for a slight twist off topic..)--zip
Reply:Some fantastic insight.   So I can see the cnc cuts and boxing everything in.  But man, one Hell of a detail job to get those perfect edges.   This is what amazes me.   Appears as if those radiused edges were completed on some sort of  a router for metal.   Following that path on a cnc mill would be crazy expensive.   Certainly a possibility.   The coating......yes....a black patina solution with a 200 degree preheat likely.   I can see it.  Any more insights would be great.  Luv those pics of other tables, etc!

Reply:that's a nice design, and i like it, but I have a feeling it's not as sturdy as it seems.  As others said, it is welded from the inside, unfortunately, I think it's just a series of tacks
Reply:Whether its tacked or welded solid makes no difference. unless you want to set your truck on it. and I bet you could do that.  Mac
Reply:Table!  I was getting excited looking at it, thought it was a woodworking bench, wondered what kind of vise or workholding system would be put on it.  Ok, credit is due here, it is a beautiful table, borders on art, my compliments to it's maker, I'll bet it's a very expensive table at that.  But  anyone can build a table, building a fine chair separates the men from the boys, I'd like to see a set of matching chairs for it.  It is probably just tacked on the inside to minimize distortion.  Nothing wrong with that, the strength would be more than adequate.  Finish is possibly oil which is then burnt off with an o/a torch and then waxed to make it shiny.  I think another possiblilty for cutting out the legs is water jet, perfect cuts with no distortion, if you can find a shop with a cutter and afford it."The reason we are here is that we are not all there"SA 200Idealarc TM 300 300MM 200MM 25130a SpoolgunPrecision Tig 375Invertec V350 ProSC-32 CS 12 Wire FeederOxweld/Purox O/AArcAirHypertherm Powermax 85LN25
