Reply:It will lift it but don't depend on the brake to hold the load. Reply:Search for dynamic vs mechanical braking.  A DC motor in a true hoist will usually have dynamic braking that retards the load from free-fall. Some winches have both types. Reply:yea, not only holding/braking strength (regarding the load), but if you ever tear it apart you'd see that they're really flimsy made.  Nothing you'd want to bet on to support the weight they're advertised at, or even 1/2 of it.  It'll work, but eventually it's gonna fail.  It's just a matter of when.  In the best case scenario, nobody's around to get hurt......or say "I told you so" Lincoln SA 200Esab Caddy 160Thermal Arc 201TSMiller Dialarc HFI don't like making plans for the day because then the word "premeditated" gets thrown around the courtroom....
Reply:I wouldnt trust it I have used a 2500 pound warn before for over head lifting in a pinch and I had to keep my hand on the button to keep it from slacking off. You might want to install a drum in front with a clicker style lock  like on the hand boat winches. Warn makes a over head winch they are not cheap though. Reply:They make purpose designed hoists and such. Id get one of those instead of jerryrigging the atv winch. Reply:I have been using mine on a boom for about two years with no issues, You just have to be smarter than the equipment you are using. (do't get under the load) I also don't lift more than I know it can handle (the crane) Another feature that I really like is I can use it with a snatch block to pull stuff up into the truck via a ramp.
