I am a new to welding (hobby) and I was wondering where most of you get the materials for your projects? I live on Long Island (Suffolk County) and I was wondering if someone could recommend a good place where I can purchase materials to build some projects. I need steel angle iron, some flat stock, sheet metal, etc. Home Depot and Lowes have some stuff, but its very limited. Can anyone suggest a place or places. Thanks
Reply:those big box stores charge an arm and a leg. google steel supply suffolk and buy from their scrap pile, you'll pay nothing for most projectshttp://fucdatbirth.blogspot.com/
Reply:As richharr said Don't buy any of your stuff from Home Depot, Lowes, Tractor Supply, etc. Either go to a steel supplier in your area or the scrap yard. You can buy a 20 foot long angle for the price you pay for a 3 to 4 foot section at Home Depot, etc.
Reply:Try Erlin Steel in Lindenhurst. Great guys. Where do you live on LI?I'm in Huntington.
Reply:Not sure about Suffolk but Kuno steel in hicksville is very reasonable and have good service. They have cut some flitch plates for me on very short notice
Reply:Curious as to what you guys are paying per pound for scrap? I go to a local steel yard and pick through their cutoffs pile often. They charge per pound.
