At about the 6:20 mark right when he (edit: quits giving the tour and finally....) lights up on this idler wheel spatter starts flying. He mentions it in his description that it's due to high energy. What is the more likely cause? Sparklers for filler rod maybe? No looks at the 'after spatter' bead tho.Sorry for the long vid, it isn't mine and I'm not even really sure how I stumbled on it.[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOBndOqZjwI[/ame]Last edited by that'll_buff_out; 05-12-2012 at 08:14 AM.How do you know the blacksmith's dog? When you hollar at him he makes a bolt for the door!
Reply:that's a lotta fireworks going on. I was wondering how clean he ground that idler down before welding. It's hard to tell. Also, at 6:45 he looks to have the torch in post flow for a really short amount of time???What size machine(HTP?) is he using?
Reply:That's kinda crazy. I've never seen that before from TIG welding. Was he using a stick electrode as filler or something?Brad GeorgeCurrent Equipment:AIRCO Heliwelder IV 300Amp Model - Total Awesomeness!Old 120v Hobart Handler MIGVarious grinders, cutting tools, hammers, clamps, ect..."I'm an amateur welder with lots left to learn..."

Reply:Is this another U-Tube post on HOW NOT TO DO A JOB?1. Wrong welding process.2. Inadequate prep.3. Reply:He never cleaned the wheel. Mistake one.He should be building it up with stick welding process. Mistake 2.Thats a large and heavy wheel. It should be pre heated prior to welding. Reply:Mistake #2 - Why should it be only completed with Stick ??
Reply:Did you see the spatter/sparks in the video while he was tig welding? Thats contamination reacting with the weld process.Thats a dirty piece of material. I'm sure the grease/oil and dirt are imbeded in it very good.Tig is not the process to be building this part up with. You need something that can burn through the contaminents.Last edited by snoeproe; 05-12-2012 at 10:16 PM.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720

Reply:Well he does say "not bad" at the end but never does show us the result now does he. Maybe he pulled a fast one on us and clamped a stick of 6010 in his TIG torch.
