In our welding shop we have a rod oven that keeps the code rods separate and hot.  This  is really simple for the shop but how do mobile welders keep their rods hot for code work?Matthew MortonTexas A&M '06Logsdon Seminary '13"Who Dares Wins""AFTF""WH2PH"SA 200 (Code: 5337)TB 302CP 302 w/22A Wire FeederMillerMatic 200Miller Syncrowave 200MillerMatic 252BurnTables 4x4 CNC MachineHypertherm 65

Reply:Somewhat on topic but yet another.........Ignorant question from another ignorant welder:Can you take a lohy rod like 7018 that's been in open storage (no oven) and light up on it for a few with a mapp or propane torch to dry it out and heat it up and get decent (or even good, or even 'code') use out of it? Does it help? Does it work? I'm sure there are guys, some mobile and some not, that don't keep rods in an oven even though they should.I don't (obviously) make a living laying down welds. And I don't weld to any written procedures but would it make a difference, for better or worse, to light up on a rod that has been stored out in the open with some heat? How do you know the blacksmith's dog? When you hollar at him he makes a bolt for the door!

Reply:Alternative to a rod oven on a small emergency job is to just pick up a new sealed can on the way to the job, as long as it isn't going to take more than a few hours from the time you open the can. This doesn't apply to TSC-type rods packed in cardboard boxes or plastic boxes with tape holding the top to the bottom -- these rods need to be dried out before acceptable for code work.
Reply:I have a 50 pound oven, that can come with me. Open a fresh can of rods at the beginning of the job and right in the oven they go.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."

Reply:I use the (dry variety) Fat Chick method. Select one with enough folds to hold at least a 50lb can of rods. Mark the folds with a Sharpie to indicate rod type. If you never change consumables, tattooing is an option.Bonus is your rod "oven" will follow you on the jobsite, and the big ones can pull your engine-drive welder and save fuel.

Reply:i like the yellow 10ld ones, the brand is caled phoenix.    there tough, roll around, they keep working.  they are set at 300 degrees F.  Someone mentioned 700F, I think thats wrong.  I'd say that is to hot and would ruin the properties in the flux.  Like bluearc and others said, your allowed 4 hrs out of a sealed can w/o one after you open it in front of inspector.    I have a bunch of 3" sched 40 pvc pipe cut at 14" length w/ caps, one end being glued.  Sray paint them different colors for identity.    When I open a can, I transfer it to the pvc containers and seal it up.    Dont ever put 6010 in a rod oven though.   I put some lincoln 7010 in a old fride w/ a light bulb, I'd say it was not much more than 100 degrees.    In about a half a year, some of the flux started cracking.    Now I keep the xx10 in pvc containes and nothing more, it's not supposed to be preheated.

Reply:@ 123weld; do teh homemade pvc containers work better than the store bought ones for long term storage?
Reply:Both should be airtight, but you can make more PVC containers quick and cheap. I use military ammo cans, which have rubber gaskets. They work great.
Reply:FWIW the aforementioned lincoln ten pound cans have a re-sealable lid.IW Local 580 NY, NY
