So i've done some searching on google/other forums about 4130 tubing. I have usually tig welded with er70 rod but have heard that er80 has higher strength which would be good because i'm welding a sprint car frame/cage. I've also heard that if you do not preheat the 4130 material it is prone to crack with er80? But also another person say that preheating is not necessary. There is so much wishy washy information out there on the correct way to weld 4130 and i need some good evidence on whether to weld with er310, er70, or er80. 4130 tubing is .083" wall so i don't know if preheating is necessary with thinner wall or not....thanks everyone!JoshMiller Dynasty 200Millermatic 211Instagram?.... find me @ WELD_MEDIC
Reply:You can do whatever you want, but under 1/8" I don't preheat or stress relieve. I do use ER-80s-D2. At or over 1/8th I preheat to 200 degrees with an inter pass limit of 250 degrees,  and stress relieve, and still use the ER80. This is all in my WPS, so I do it.I don't stress relieve myself, the heat treater does that along with pen inspect. But you can google up the Oxy/Acet method that the airframe people do.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
