I was just wondering if anyone has welded a pop can before. Here is a pic of one that I welded. I used a Miller sycrowave 250 set at 25 amps and I used a 1/16 pure tungsten with a little ball on the end. I also used 1/32 filler rod I will say that you have to make sure to super clean the pop cans before welding because it doesn't take much to blow a hole in it. Attached Images
Reply:Nice work landj815,  looks good indeed.  Now that you have that mastered take a can and cut it in the middle, and weld it back together so that it can hold water  the middles are alot thinner than the ends. Keep up the good work  ~JacksonI'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......

Reply:cluna,   It can be done, I have seen by some people and I have done it once successfully back when i was in college and that was all I played with in my free time  until I got it.  Not doing alot a tig work these days I know I could not do it now.  The key is to have a machine that can be turned down low enough to do it.  I have a friend who can do it in his sleep, give me a few days and I will get him to do one and get some pictures of it. but as I said before  that IS a great looking job landj815 has done.  ~JacksonI'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:The real trick is to weld a 6-pack of beer together without spilling a drop.  Makes for easy carrying without the need for that pesky plastic thingie....OHHHHHHHHHHH!, ya'll are talking about empties...well, why would you bother with a can that has no beer in it, much less a sodie pop? Reply:Cluna, No problems here my friend.  I did not take it as doubting. I was just explaining that I could not do it now, but I know someone who can.  He is out of town for a day or so on a job, but I will try to get him to do one this weekend and get some pictures posted just for conversation sake.  I am not suprised that someone already on the board has not posted one.  Oh and I have to agree with smith boy  fooling with "empty" beer cans kind of defeats the purpose, hehehe ~JacksonI'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......

Reply:Id love to see the old "welded soda can trick" It is one of those mythical things I've always heard about but never seen. Also i read once about some guys that can O/A cut with the torch and after they get the cut started can cut the gas off and cut steel using only oxygen. Ever heard of that?I'm not a Engineer, I just play one on the weekend.
Reply:My cutting torch will cut on O2 only, found this out when I set the valves wrong and accidentally shut off the acetylene while trying to adjust and cut at the same time.  'course I've been playing ever since.   Got to keep the steel burning well though if it gets too cold the burn stops.
Reply:here is one that will blow your mind.   Do you know that when you cut with an O/A torch you are actually not melting the steel, but causing a chemical reaction and causing a rapid rusting or oxidizing effect which gives off heat as a by product of the reaction.  hehehehe    I told one of my college professors he was full of it until he explained it to me.  Anyone else ever been explained that?I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:That's why it's called burning by a lot of people and why you can keep cutting with oxygen only.(just gotta keep the fire burning real hot)
Reply:Isnt that the same principal of a plasma cutter? The spark and air causing a super heated transfer after the spark makes an arc. I never thought about it but I guess looking at it that way O/A and Plasma cutters are closely related.I'm not a Engineer, I just play one on the weekend.
Reply:Back to topic (almost) better weld full cans of English beer it still tastes ok warm.American beer tastes like #$&& warm!
Reply:Plasma cutter is a different process.  It actually creates a stream of super-heated plasma that blows the molten metal away.  Oxy-fuel cutting is an exothermic redox reaction as described by Hammack.  Once mild steel reaches a kindling temperature of 1500-1600F the addition of oxygen will cause it to oxidize or burn very quickly.  An oxygen lance is a perfect example of this behavior.  One can be made from some 1/4" sch40 hooked up to about 75-100 PSI of oxygen.  Preheat with a welding torch and then drive the lance through the steel.  The lance is consumed in the process, but one can pierce several feet of steel like this.-Heath

Reply:Yea better practice on some cheap swill first too. No good wasting the good stuff incase it blows thru.I'm not a Engineer, I just play one on the weekend.
Reply:Halbritt is right.  Plasma parts the metal with a stream of air, while OA burns it up with oxygen.  It's an intreguing idea.  I have never tried to eliminate ace. from the cutting process, while cutting.  In practice, I dont have a torch on for a long period of time at a stretch, so the cost savings of running o2 only on the remainder of a cut might not be much for me, but for companies that burn through several hundred feet of thick plate, I wonder if there is a way use this to decrease fuel costs.  Just a thought.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:OMG Smithboy that wasn't supposed to be an attack, just a warning about warm beer.Gotta keep it drinkable!  Wine is for the folks who pay lots of money to have weldors make ornamental steelwork for them. (somtimes spelled WHINE!)Is beer drinking a requirement for good welding?  With my welding it can only help!

Reply:There is an optimal operating relationship between beer and welding, where, during the consumption of beer, weld quality improves, peaks, and then starts to degrade rapidly.  There are certain factors that affect this relationship, such as the quality of the welder, the bodyweight of the weldor and whether or not one grabs the hose from the O/A rig and runs a little straight oxygen into the welding helmet.Circumstances will dictate when one has exceeded the optimal operating relationship.  For example, when I set myself on fire the other night with the O/A rig, I had to come to a conclusion about whether I should stop cutting or stop drinking.  Then I remembered to put myself out. Reply:halbritt, you didn't use beer to put out the fire did you?????I think THEY remove points for that. Also, if you have any charts or graphs explaining the beer/weld relationships, I'd like to see 'em.I've done a lot of experimenting over the years and I keep forgetting to write the data down.
Reply:Heaven's no!  I'd never waste good beer like that.I'll have to do some more experimentation to develop the charts and graphs that you're asking for.  I'll get started on that right away.-HeathThanks!

Reply:I tried doing that trick.  Did'nt work out to well....I was using about 25amps, pulsed, up slope currant was 20, background currant was about 15amps, 50% (whatever that means), pulse time 1.0hz?, AC wave was set to 51hz up and 46hz down.  Came out horrible.  Used a 3/32 zirconium tungsten, with a point, and 3/32 4043 filler rod....(think thats the problem?????!?!?!?)  I would guess it would have worked out better with correctly sized tungsten and filler metal?  What do ya think?  Do the pulse settings sound about right or no?Thanks,Matt2002 VW Golf TDi1994 Audi S4
Reply:works good with 1/16" pure tungsten and .035 filler. dont weld on top of the can weld on top of the weld.only thing worse than an ugly woman is an ugly weld
Reply:ugly yes.  but watertightI tried all sorts of things.   including FULL unopened cans...   big mistake there.

Reply:did you use some .045 on those blades, or just fuse them?looks good
Reply:Wow. I've always heard that TIG is the hardest to master....But I can't imagine doing this with Stick or Oxy/Ace would be easier!"To tell which polarity to use go to the bathroom and pour some water down the drain. If it runs clockwise use straight polarity. If it runs counter-clockwise use reverse polarity. Or if it just gurgles use alternating current." -RandomDave

Reply:Just for the record, if we're picking teams, I call Passenger!
Reply:now that the can thing is done try welding to razor blades together ive only seen pics of never seen it done
Reply:They are fused, no filler added, .045 would be much too big, you would need like .010" filler smaller would be even better...
Reply:
Reply:^More like brazing than welding, with the filler melted on top, still pretty neat
