Hey there. I am wanting to move to Alberta with in the next couple of months. I currently live in Winnipeg, Manitoba. I want to start a welding apprenticeship. I have post secondary training, cwb tickets in stick (all position), and mig (solid wire, flux, and metal core, all being flat and horizontal), and I have 2 years experience working as a welder in a shop.  My question is, How would I go about getting an apprenticeship when I move there? Some people/places have told me just to go there and go knocking on doors applying for level 1 apprentice positions. Is this true?Last edited by dyroy; 05-06-2014 at 09:55 PM.

Reply:A lot of work there right now with your cwb tickets you'll get hired fast buttttttt they pay under 30 for a cwb structural welder doing construction if you have the hrs get your red seal by challenging it sounds like you probally have the hrs to do so already
Reply:2 years isn't enough for red seal you need a total of 4 1/2 years and 7200 hours I'm a winnipegger myself. If you took vocational you'll typically receive first year apprenticeship that way, and is good for 3 years prior. Cwb will decide whether your hours are good for a level 2 and you go from there. Lately it seems it's a know somebody basis for pipeline and easier structural to find a job. Depending what you want.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalkif you can step across it I can weld it.
Reply:I am a first year Apprentice, as I graduated. I am not currently apprenticing at my shop. I was wondering what the steps were to find an apprenticeship in Alberta. Most of the people I have asked have said just move there then apply for an apprentice position. I just want to make sure I don't move there then realize that I needed different things before I can get an apprenticeship there.
Reply:Most provinces have some sort of trades qualification certificate.  Usually you have to prove more hours than an apprentice and then you challenge.  When employers are reluctant to take apprentices but will hire this is the possible route to take.  I cannot stress enough to keep copies of record of employments and pay stubs.  Companies go broke and are instantly gone.   It was over ten years ago when I drove through Edmonton on the Trans Canada highway.  You could see huge hand painted signs on rooftops: " Welders wanted here"  I don't think things have changed much.
Reply:Yea they have they use printed signs now lol
