we use these cell door handles by the thousands. the brass one's cost about 30 bucks apiece and delivery takes forever so i made this simple jig to fabricate them from scrap. i drilled a 15/16" hole in a piece of 3/8th by 2" flat then cut it along the c.l. of the hole and tacked it to a piece of 6"x1/4" flat so a 7/8th round bar sits in nicely. i then tacked some stops for the short pieces of 2"x 1/4" angle that make up the rest of the handle. Reply:Nice jig.
Reply:I can see how that would be handy. Jigs are great little things for speed and repeatability. I wonder what the time savings is....100 the old way VS 100 the new way? The boss should like that you took the initiative, good job.If you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them.
Reply:I was told  not to use the term JIG as its not politically correct or whatever. We were told , "its a fixture".Nice work Doc.  I have a chance to buy an old jail door and side bars for $150. I was thinking they would be nice to keep kids out of the parents wine cellar. My kid is of age and I dont drink wine but is $150 worth it for the jail door and sides Doc? Anybody?

Reply:I'd be more concerned why you need to keep replacing these " by the thousands".Maybe a different design is called for possibly?.No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:84JSD, thats a  real good answer.
Reply:dsw, there's about 15,000 inmates here and while each of them is not in a one man cell we still need lots of handles.
Reply:hey insane: 150. for a cell door and bar section? just a rough guess of my time alone to cut and drill the crossbars for the gate then cut the round bars and fit it up with the lock~ 1000. not including cost of materials. good deal!

Reply:Are we discussing a welding jig or machining jig? A machining jig is used to locate or guide a drill or other machine tool. Sometimes a jig is more like a template. A machining fixture holds a part. Welding has an entirely different usage. A jig lays out or locates a part to be welded. A welding fixture holds a part and allows rotation in an axis for welding. We use jigs everyday, fixtures are generally more complicated. This is a door handle jig.Need a citation? Jig and Fixture Design, 5E By Edward G. Hoffman page 257. See attached. Like I said before Doc... nice jig.  Attached Images

Reply:Whatever it is, I was always taught that if you need to do something more that about 3 times you needed one. Nice doohickey Doc If you cant fix it with a hammer, it must be an electrical problem."Boy, everyone starts with a full bag of luck and an empty bag of experience. The trick is to fill the bag of experience before the bag of luck is empty."-Grandad circa 1990ish
