Customer of mine recently built a new shop on his property, and wanted some stairs built.  Initially, he was asking about me doing the stringers from C channel, but I told him I couldn't do the requisite cuts in my 7x12 horizontal bandsaw.  Also told him I'm an OA noob, and didn't trust myself to do the channel work with my torch.  We settled on having the stringers built from tube steel, specifically 2x2x.10 square.Took some measurements, and did the layout.  He wanted the treads (42x12) to over hang each other by 1/2", and the top tread to sit just under the threshold, which would put the tread 7/8" from the foundation.First stringer tacked together, and a bit of bevel.http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...62620324_n.jpgHad to get creative with my Jet band saw. This is one of the tread mounts.http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...04953454_n.jpgBit of welding, with my Lincoln 175, .030 wire.http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...09176103_n.jpgFinish welding done.  Once the first side was done, the second one came along a lot faster.  Before the first side was tacked together, I just laid each piece over new material, scribed lines, and got to cuttin'.  Welds ground down, so treads could sit flush to the stringers.http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...95679995_n.jpgThe black line represents the joint in the concrete foundation at my customer's shop. 1/2" Mounting holes on either side.http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...43707966_n.jpgFinish welding the stringer mounts, welding all done!http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...27159225_n.jpgCustomer provided the treads, $100 ea!http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...49779448_n.jpgHad to preassemble the contraption so I could make some new holes in the bottom and upper treads.  The tube steel design make it so I couldn't utilize the "stock" holes on the treads.  On top of the mobile fab table, you can see the quick jig I did.  Almost there.  Just needs paint and installation!http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...67567520_n.jpgTook the parts to my customer's shop, and he prepped, primed, and painted them.  He also installed the stairs.http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...82470305_n.jpghttp://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...42657190_n.jpgInstallation completed.  I enjoyed the project, realize its overkill, but am very happy with the end result.  My first set of stair stringers!  Had to use stainless steel, swivel elevator bolts on this job, as his brick work slopes away from the shop somewhat.  Thanks for looking!http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...92984427_n.jpg-AaronJet 17.5" Drill Press1942 South Bend 16x84 Lathe1980s Miller 320A / BP --- 2013 Power Mig 2562012 Jet 7x12 Horizontal BandsawVictor O/A Setup

Reply:Yes, Gerry..I know how to make the pics show up in the post, but upon previewing, I noticed the first pic was way too big.  That, coupled with the fact there were so many images, I decided just to put links.  Thanks for looking!Jet 17.5" Drill Press1942 South Bend 16x84 Lathe1980s Miller 320A / BP --- 2013 Power Mig 2562012 Jet 7x12 Horizontal BandsawVictor O/A Setup
Reply:You did a real nice job, creative too . I just removed a set of store bought steel stringers that I installed about 15 years ago. They were for my wifes business and were the main entrance. But here in the great white north we use salt and they didn't stand up. So I just had to replace them (with wood). Next year the other set has to go (less traffic but no better). I thought they would last a long time (powder coated and all) but the 1/8th flatbar rotted first and they hold the treads. Reply:Looks odd with the first step out being level with the landing.  As a carpenter by trade, i'm anal about my stair layout.
Reply:I've never seen stringers built from tubing either. Very creative. I like them.Definately overkill but, well worth it.Very cool, nice work.
