I'm a weekend welder considering an Optrel Helmet, and would like to know how long it takes the solar helmet to function if it has been sitting in a dark garage for a couple of weeks. When something breaks, it might also be my luck that the day would be overcast, or a weld has to be made at night (I weld/grind outside. )Thanks,Bill Vorhies
Reply:BillI have had a Optrel Satellite for over a year now and I'm sure there are times when it has sat in my shop for over a week with no problems and if I remember right the welding arc charges it as well as any sunlight. I don't think that you will find keeping it charged really is a factor. I think it is a great helmet.Cowboy
Reply:Speaking of hoods:I've got a speedglass XL(pipefitters style plastic) and it's 4 or 5 years old. I've dropped it from great distances, run it over, burned it up and every other destructive thing you can think of has happened to it. It works fine except it seems to be darker on one side than the other by close to a shade. I'm wondering if this is a common problem with speedglass?Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.
