How do we feel about using a static phase converter (around $100 bucks worth) on a mill with a 1/2 hp motor to go from single to 3~
Reply:I'm not a big fan of static phase converters. You don't get a balanced load. You have to "derate " the driven motor. I run into these a lot on single phase lift stations. To get 5HP worth of pump capacity, they install and size the electrics for 7.5HP pumps Everything runs hotter due to the phase inbalance. Either go to a VFD, or a rotary converter.

Reply:John with all the 3 phase motors laying around looking for work, build the rotary converter, you'll be a lot happier.Practiclemachinist is a good source of information, although some of those guys get overly carried away building convertors.Appreciation Gains You Recognition-
