I have a project I'm working on to mount an english wheel to a piece of 4in x 4in sch.40 pipe, my problem is I have 2 pieces that are 3ft long I would like to weld together. I have a 225 ac buzz box, lincoln180 power mig and a diversion 165 tig. I'm not sure which machine is best to use? Also what is the best method, I need to keep this as straight as possible. I added a picture below to show what I'm trying to do. The 4 in pipe will be mounted to the floor as well as the wall. Thanks Steve Attached Images
Reply:Do you have rollers to put it in???I'd mig it, myself personally.Bevel it, 1/8 land, 1/16 gap, and roll away from you at about 2:00 o'clock....That's how I'd do it anyway....Just a couple welders, big hammers, grinders, and torches.Work will free you.Men in dirty jeans built this country, while men in clean suits have destroyed it. Reply:I don't have rollers, I was going to use 3/16 angle V side up and lay the pipe in and level it,tack it and weld. Steve
Reply:I've got this piece of angle iron for tacking up stuff in.Works good for rolling too.I'd use mig.Bevel and roll. But if you want to go overkill, put it in the 6g position, with argon purge...Just a couple welders, big hammers, grinders, and torches.Work will free you.Men in dirty jeans built this country, while men in clean suits have destroyed it. Reply:I will bevel, mig and roll the pipe, that sounds good. Thanks for the advise, Steve
Reply:No matter the process you use, make four good tacks. At 3, 6, 9, and 12. Keep the weld the same size all the way around. If it does pull out of line, pipe is real easy to heat shrink back into shape.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:GTAW.Unless you're not any good at it. Tig welding and pipe go together beautifully. Bevel it ~30 degrees. No land. 1/8" 70-S2 filler wireses. If you're more comfortable with GMAW then go ahead. But
Reply:Wouldn't I have to purge the pipe with argon and can my diversion 165 get enough penetration in 1/4 in steel it's only rated for 3/16, even with 30 degree bevel?Because I'm up for it as long as the machine is. Steve
