In some of the projects shown here, I see what I would refer to as wrought iron design. What tool would you use to make the designs (they're like spirels for lack of a better word) and has anyone made a tool for this ? I need to make a grate to go on my screen door so the dogs will stop going thru the screen every time a critter passes thru my back yard !(See honey, we really did need that welder for around the house !)
Reply:john,Sounds like you are looking for a scroller. You want cheap, go to Harbor Freight. You want good, go to Shop Outfitters.

Reply:Go to www.anvilfire.com. Also look up NOMMA and ABANA on Google. These are websites or organizations catering to the artist blacksmith groups. What you are referring to is called a scroll form. Most 'smiths make them to suit each job but you can probably buy one. To make one you would take a piece of flat iron and scroll it hot so the material you are going to bend conforms to the outside of the form. After you are satisfied with the design, weld it to a short piece of angle iron so you can clamp it in a vise.
Reply:you can buy just the scroller from shop outfitters and get a really good book free. when you bend a scrool on a shop outfitters scroller it will be flat and you can duplacate it over and over ken w
