I see an ad in the paper for an antique compressor. I like old but not sure what antique would be. What kind of information should I look for to determine whether it is still good or good enough to use?
Reply:1st thing you want to look at is how safe does it appear, tank condition, SAFETY BLOWOFF, and general mechanicle condition. Then, pull it over by hand and listen for rod knock.Inspect the air intake for signs of paint contamination and general clenliness. After that, asuming it passes, wind it up and see how it performs.  Take a tool along and determine if it will support the tool.Of course, if it's 1930 vintage, liquid cooled with a 20 horse motor, and says Garder Denver, and weighs about 1500 pounds, you just gotta drag it home so you can haul it to a museum.Appreciation Gains You Recognition-
Reply:wouldn't that be a hoot!
Reply:antique.?????? i got a 1953 IR .....i consider it just broke in
Reply:Does a 1942 GD count as antique? Thems some rugged units. gets daily use.
Reply:Does it have water cooling?  Constant run?  Rivited air receiver?Appreciation Gains You Recognition-
Reply:yes, yes, and it's on a piece of equipment with a new (1960's) welded receiver. The 1912 Westinghouse has a riveted reviever, but I don't think that one counts.
