Passed first MIG test for job

Went to school for pipe welding Tig and stick finished up in may. I got a phone call yesterday to go test today I show up guy says what kind of test you taking? Well I know Tig and stick I say so I tack up my 2 inch pipe get a tap on my shoulder guy says " just spoke to the guy that sent you here said he needs Mig welders, know how to mig? I'm like he'll yeah lol.So never had mig welded in my life 15 minutes later I'm done with my flat and vertical t joint (3beads)call the guy over he checks it out calls me into his office says I passed lol. personally I thought it looked like crap kinda like 7018 run too cold.Well I'm happy said they would let me know Tuesday with start date and all that good stuff.

Reply:The problem with MIG is that (from my point of view) you cannot rely on how the bead looks just like you do with stick. You can make cold welds that look great. With stick, having the machine hot enough for the rod not to stick to the workpiece gives you, at the very least, some degree of penetration. With MIG it doesn't work like that.I have the bad luck of owning a big *** MIG machine (3phase) that doesn't have any kind of chart on it to figure out the wire speed and voltage, so I always end up making some testing welds before welding on any proyect. And since I am so worried about not getting penetration, I always get the machine overly hot (like blowing holes all over the place) and start turning it down from there. Works great unless I am trying to weld mufflers... XD XD.Seriously, follow the charts with the recomendations for wire speed and voltage for a given thickness of your machine and fine tune it from there. Don't go just by eye or you will make cold welds.Good luck and congratulations on your first MIG test!Mikel
Reply:Thanks everyone. Was very excited to pass the test. Appreciate the advice Mikel_24. Trust me I dont pretend to be some kind of MIG expert there is a lot more to the story. I'll give a little more details.It was some kind of "suitecase" wirefeeder where you can only adjust wire speed that got its juice from some kind of Lincoln multiprocess machine. Had a dial for Stick, TIG, and a a few others on there that I saw. There was a guy in front of me that had been there for 30 min. said he had like 7 years mig experience but he couldnt get the machine to "act right" The weld kept falling out on vertical look droopy  and messy pretty much with any combo of speed and heat he tried. One of the regular employees came and set the machine to as close as he could get but said its still welding like crap. So after about the 5th time this guy in front of me complained about the machine to the shop manager and an hour later I said let me try. Got the gun turned it to 20 volts wire speed 5 rand my flat piece then turned it vertical turned it down to 18 volts and wire speed 4 ran about half way up was looking saggy and like it wanted to fall out then turned it down to 16 volts and finished off.Guy said he thinks its too cold to be welding at that temp I told him, I've lost my patience and if its meant to be its meant to be if not oh well. Then I told him your going to be here all day either refuse to take the test or go down in flames, which he replied "damn its like that" im like "yup" called the shop manager over and the rest is history.First day on the job trust me im asking a crap load of question lol.
