A bit of info first....I've been lol in for work a while now and have had no luck. I've got a degree but it hasn't helped me land a job at all so I am looking to learn a trade through an apprenticeship or helper position. My first action was to get placed in a SMAW class at the local JuCo to learn and get some hood time. Through talking to the teacher I learned the (fairly) local shipyard offers a well paid apprenticeship program that I may find interesting. As of now they have a structural and "outside machinist" program. Best I can tell that means millwright. My question is though, what does that entail? What does an OM/Millwright do on a marine yard? It states some generics but nothing in depth. I'm wondering if I will get to machine things at all, or is it more so assembly/rebuild? Any info is appreciated!Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:In the yards I work in and around the Outside Machinist usually remove/install machinery and components. Items such as pumps, motors, valves, and engines. Their work is very similar to a millwright. They do alignment work on shafts rudders and such.Mike
Reply:That is pretty much in line with the job description, which I guess proves I don't know much about shipyards at all as I'm still a bit lost on day to day work. When you google image search the term millwright you see people working on massive gearboxes and huge pumps with connecting rods the size of my leg. Do you rebuild those, or just place them once rebuilt?Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:Outside machinist will do both install and rebuild. The larger equipment is often overhauled in place on a vessel, as removing it would require a lot of extra work. The Outside Machinist often assist Factory Reps in the repairs.Mike

Reply:I was a sawmill Journeyman Millwright and it entailed any thing from electrical, plumbing, welding, wrenching, and even cleanup. We were like the Blacksmiths in the 1800's. We did it all. A very good trade to learn a lot but it is dangerous and hard work. But you can learn a lot in a short amount of time. It doesn't pay the best but you get to do a lot for what it pays.GalenMiller TrailBlazer 302 EFIThermal Dynamics 252i w/WeldCraft WP 9F tig torch and foot controlThermal Dynamics Pak 52Millermatic 250 w/Spoolmate 30aLincoln SA-200 gas driven welder from grandfatherBlacksmith shop

Reply:When I mentioned that they dont pay very good I meant to post that it doesnt compare to wineries. As a top winery maintenance tech tops out over $45 an hour. Now that is mostly here in California and as I am in Norcal and most of the wineries are all pretty close to the same wage scale. I just wanted to point this out as I would have never thought about a winery paying this well as coming from a sawmill millwright. The winery is a much better place to work as they have great benefits and its a lot cleaner environment, easier on your body and as compared to the Sawmill much safer. Not wanting to change your ideas but make you aware of what I didnt know about wineries. good luck with your choice.GalenMiller TrailBlazer 302 EFIThermal Dynamics 252i w/WeldCraft WP 9F tig torch and foot controlThermal Dynamics Pak 52Millermatic 250 w/Spoolmate 30aLincoln SA-200 gas driven welder from grandfatherBlacksmith shop
Reply:I put in for the apprenticeship but was turned down because i didn't meet the minimum requirements. Being a shipyard atmosphere I guess they preferred the 1 year as a mandatory thing rather than a preference. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
