Yeah i got undercut. I need practice. My aluminum improved though.....
Reply:Got a pic of the back side of that plate?SS looks a little hot.
Reply:backside pf the aluminum plate is welded also if thats what you were refering to. Also, for sure the stainless was hot. its strictural and i wanted to make sure its not ganna kill someone. lol
Reply:Wanting to see the backside of the SS plate. You are aware that by welding SS too hot that you lose is SS properties. = Rust
Reply:Welding too hot can be as bad as welding too cold.  As LarryO said, running it too hot will take away the stainless properties.  Also, stainless should be back-purged with argon to prevent sugaring (oxidation) on the back side of the weld.  By welding too hot, leaving undercut, and (presumably) not shielding the other side of the material, you have produced a weak weld with a greatly elevated risk for oxidation inside the pipe, under the plate, and on and around the weld itself. Not trying to be a jerk, but if that piece is really "strictural", you should throw it out and try again, because it surely wouldn't pass an inspection as-is, and inspections are there to make sure things aren't gonna kill someone.  And not getting inspected doesn't mean it's ok to turn out a product that wouldn't pass an inspection.Last edited by anickode; 07-14-2012 at 09:54 PM.You didn't build that.'85 Miller AEAD-200LE

Reply:You can run stainless without any undercut by practicing on similar thickness scrap before welding your part.....It takes a little time to come up with a perfect parameter. Also when you have thin tube on a plate, concentrate your heat on the plate and wash up to the tube. You will eliminate your UNDERCUTLast edited by B_C; 07-15-2012 at 09:28 PM.  Miller Dynasty 350Twenty Six HammersThree Crow BarsBig Rock
Reply:From the huge bites of undercut in the pipe, it looks like you were welding with the pipe standing up on the plate and each time you moved the torch up to the pipe it was blasted by the arc and all the metal ran downhill. Try using less power if you do any more, and weld with the pipe horizonal, rolling along on sawhorses as you weld.Welding/Fab Pics: www.UtahWeld.com
