I need a piece of advice for the following issue:I've got a problem with electric arc priming .I am using a Telwin Inverter with 130 Amps max amperage.I am also using 2.5mm 6013 coated elecotrdes .I weld cold laminated steel and generally butt welding .I have properly sanded the surfaces to be welded and also contact surface with ground clamp.I also replaced the ground clamp with another one with a stronger "bite".My issue is as follows:I thing that arc priming takes too much.I generraly strike the electrode against the metal, and it takes me about 10 times to prime the arc,with usual mishaps:electrode sticking,spattering,smoke and so on.I tried to crank up the amps but the reverse is that spattering occurs the moment the arc starts.Can you tell me if there is any kind of trick to get this issue solved..or at least part of it?Thank you ..all answers will be greatly appreciated.
Reply:If you are trying to start an arc by jabbing straight down with the electrode, you will nearly always stick the electrode to the base metal.Until you get accustomed welding, you need to use a "scratch start" technique.Scratch start is done by using a deliberate and quick dragging motion where you don't touch the metal surface until you are moving the rod slightly above the metal.Sort of like striking matches. You move the rod and then dip it down to touch the metal but you don't stop dragging. Then after the rod has touched the metal, quickly lift the rod away from the metal just a small amount. This will help getting the arc established. Once the arc is going, move to where you want the weld and begin welding.
