The guy that runs my town's transfer station gave me these hammers today. He said some oldtimer was gonna throw them in the steel dumpster! I just love them because they're hammers.... but don't know what they're for?  Whatever they are...they are in perfect condition. Dump guy says the center one looks like some kind of body hammer?  Attached Images
Reply:The one on the left is a sheet metal hammer called a riveting hammer. The middle one looks like a body hammer.
Reply:Left hand one is a straight peen hammer. Blacksmiths use the tapered end to spread material when forging. The peen allows you to stretch metal in one direction vs all directions with the "normal" face of the hammer. Small hammers are usually used for lighter more delicate work.Middle one might be a rounding hammer for blacksmithing. They are usually used to dish metal either in a swage block or stump. Very similar to how a sheet metal guy uses a mallet and shot bag.Right hand one looks very much like an upholsterers hammer used to tack down the padding and upholstery on chairs. Nice catch. I've got a bunch of old hammers I saved from an old guy up the street who was cleaning out his dads workshop and scrapping anything and everything that was steel. Shame, I know he tossed a ton of really nice antique tools before I got there..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:Thanks alot for the info. Don't know if I'll ever use them...but at least the price was right.
Reply:I have seen the left one called a tinners hammer. Never seen the other two before
Reply:I always bring more back from the dump then I bring!!  Needed a tailpipe for my caprice, and sitting on the steel pile was a caprice frame with the tailpipe on it.  Also found a perfectly good portable air tank.  It holds air for months.
Reply:Found this in a book i had at home, hope you can read it ok. Attached Images
