I want to make a fancy outdoor gas grill. What sheet metal thickness would you recomend? I was thinking 1/8" mild steel.Stainless would be better but I don't have the proper sheilding gas for stainless wire.Dave ReberWadsworth Ohio
Reply:It depends on how hot, how big and how much you use it. I make hundreds of commercial fire pits for campgrounds. They get abused and people have very hot fires in them. I used to make them out of 3/16" but switched to 1/4" because of hot fire warpage. Also hot fires make them rust faster. Being a gas grill, you could probably get away with 1/8" for a homeowner grill. I would go up to 3/16" if it is commercial, otherwise it will start warping and looking homemade pretty fast. If you want to go stainless, you can usually rent a cylinder for a one time use.
Reply:Guess it depends on the part of the grill. 14 g at least with mild steel works for covers and doors. It will be quite stiff is you are braking it or bracing. If it is a gas grill then even the fire box could be alright at 1/8" mild steel.I don't know if stainless needs to be thicker.
Reply:Thanks guysBlackbart I never thought about renting thanksDave ReberWadsworth Ohio

Reply:Mauricio How thick is the fire brick? That is a great idea. I have only seen true brick size fire bricks.ThanksDave ReberWadsworth Ohio
Reply:I have some fire brick "tiles". Mine are roughly 6x6 1" thick. I think they used to be spares for the old coal furnace at the farm house. I've seen other sizes as well at the masonry supply house as well as on some of the forge sites. One thing about fire bricks used outside. If they get wet, then heated, they can possibly spall as the water turns to steam. I was warned to make sure the fire bricks for my forge were dried well and slowly to drive off moisture if they were left out in the rain..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
